Chassis dampening. How to do it?

Hello everyone,

Has anyone used lead weights?
You will find them attached to your expensive aluminum wheels.
I found it attached to my tube modified Sony 999ES transport. Dan Wright (Modwright) uses this trick along with other tweaks.

I use lead shot, stuffed used to refill shotgun shells. Get from you local gunshop for maybe a buck a pound.

If we have enough interest among us all we could organize a sort of 'group buy'. One of us purchases a larger lot of Dynamat which should be cheaper than small orders and then ships to the rest of us. Not a horrible idea.

I agree it's a good idea, but it's a lot of work. diyaudio.com just had a couple the Cardas bulk order and the Gainclone PCB's both threads were monsterous.

Yeah but diyaudio is a much larger group of peeps. We are talking about a dozen here or so. I'd volunteer but with closing a house and my professional exam in June, I couldn't do it for the next couple of months. Plus I already have a bunch of dynamat.

By the way, I was in on that Cardas group order.

Congrats on the house. I wish I did get in on the Cardas group buy. I'm comtemplating trying to build a Gainclone. However, I think I should start small pehaps a CMOY. Less chance of doing something stupid like killing myself

I've used Dynamat-Xtreme on my Pass-Labs X1 Preamp, my Rega Planet, Mira, and a host of other amps and such with AWESOME results. I think the aluminum on them gives it an added shielding of some kind. Great stuff....but buy it on eBay. (you'll go through it quickly)

I've been using some cool stuff for weights that I'll start a new topic on. But it involves small wooden boxes, lead shot, and candle wax. (Are you puzzled yet?)

I've always gotten my dynamat extreme off ebay for fairly reasonable prices. I think I paid about $40 shipped for a trunk kit which consisted of like 4 good sized sheets. I've got one left, everything is damped like crazy and I even used some on a "job" I did for someone else.

Parts Express (perhaps others, too) sell something quite akin to DynaMat Extreme from Cascade Audio Engineering called V-Max, quite reasonably.

I've used quite a bit of it in the past...you are not likely paying for brand name status here.

Thickness is .060". It seems pretty much the same as it is constructed from butyl rubber bonded to a thin layer of aluminum.

20 sheets of 12.5 x 30'' squares is $248.80 (for 'Group Buy' purposes) for 52 square feet of it.

Ok, I just added a whole bunch of Dynamat Xtreme to my Electrocompaniet EC 4.7 preamp.

Here are the pics:

I wasn't sure how much to put so I was a little conservative and didn't try to cover every open area. I can tell you that the preamp feels more solid and hefty. When I rap my knuckles on the lid, it definitely doesn't give off a metallic ring like it used to.

Now to plug it back into the system and see if I can hear a difference...

Well I can easily hear a difference.

In fact, I am getting such a big improvement that I need to change some settings on my 40's (especially in the bass department)!!

Lot tighter and cleaner presentation all around. Better clarity, weight, and impact in the bass. Highs are also more defined and have a little more shimmer. In the midrange voices have more depth and presence.

Absolutely a no brainer

I will start working on my other components over the next few days.

does dynamat extreme handle heat well? My class A amp runs a tad hot... would this be an issue? what about ers? i've been reluctant to cover the transformer in my amp with ers for the same reason....

Dynamat can go under the hood of the car, so I imagine it can handle heat very well.

$25 for shipping is about right, the stuff is quite heavy despite what you might first think.
