You might want to look at the Roberta Flack album First Take.
It features Ron Carter playing bass on the hit single The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

Bethany and Rufus- 900 miles.  Bethany Yarrow (Peter Yarrow's daughter!) has a jazzy folksy sound, accompanied by Rufus Cappadocia playing cello with an added bass string.  Incredible album!

Try two by Carmen Lundy. This is Carmenr Lundy and Jazz and the New Songbook: Live at the Madrid. Both have her brother, Curtis Lundy, running the baselines on his upright.

I share a lot of your taste.  I want to thank the person who pointed out the album of the singing of Diane Reeves to the move "Goodnight and Goodluck", she was wonderful in it.  I will try to buy that album.  If you are a Patricia Barber fan, you may know already her great songs with standup bass, but here are  some of my favorites:

Summertime, from A Distortion of Love
Blue Prelude, from A Fortnight in France
Use Me, from Companion
Postmodern Blues, from Modern Cool (complex instrumentation, but nice bass work with vocals near the end)

This album, Goodnight and Good Luck, is indeed wonderful.  My favorite by Dianne Reeves.
Thank you again!

I fell in love with Diana Reeves when she sang with Wynton Marsalis in the song "Feeling of Jazz".
I ran out and bought one of her albums (?) and thought is was boring. I had high hopes and was dissappointed.

p.s. Twice in the last few minutes i mentioned that song. Yea...it's that good. ha ha

I DEFINITELY got one of those for you!  Gail Pettis- May I Come In (OA2).  Out of Seattle.  Very good sounding, too.  And what Lonewolfny said.

Dear Bob,

Which Dianne Reeves album bored you?  I find many of her albums over-produced and diffuse.  Goodnight and Good Luck is utter simplicity, but I find it riveting. If you like her voice and style but not all her material, you might try this one.

Thanks airhead (I have a bit of a problem acknowledging a fellow as an "airhead".  )
I have her The Grand Encounter 1996.
It's been a couple years since I've listened to it. Maybe she deserves another spin. Who knows, maybe I'll fall in love with her again.

The work she did with Wynton on "Feeling of Jazz" is so wonderful in my mind, that maybe, just maybe....a "regular mundane" album would pale in comparison to a song as "Feeling of Jazz".

I'll look for Goodnight and Good Luck Thank you!  :thumb:

Dave's True Story - "Sex Without Bodies" http://www.allmusic.com/album/sex-without-bodies-r333482
Other releases of theirs are wonderful as well.

Nikki Parrot - Fly Me to the Moon

She both sings AND plays the upright bass

Pretty good. Best part is that the LP is available and is a decent pressing

Crooked Still, "Still Crooked" or "Live"

Closer to the (excellent) Wailin' Jenny than other things on this list.  Spacey vocals and Double Bass, highly recommended.

Amelia - After All. She has an amazing voice, especially when she speaks French. Blackbird Pie is an amazing song.

In my opinion Amelia is one of the best under the radar bands to come from Portland OR.

Sheila Jordan made several albums with only bass accompaniment. You can hear samples on Amazon.
I have one of those with bassist Harvie Swartz and it's super fine stuff.

Well recorded music from these ladies. I ordered a couple of cds from their web site and received a handwritten thank you note. Nice touch I thought.
