Hello all,

I'm looking for an album/artist reccomendation that features a lot upright bass and a female vocalist. My favorite female singers include (in no particular order):

Melody Gardot
Patricia Barber
Diana Krall
Shirley Horn
Sophie Milman
Eva Cassidy
Sara Gazarek

I'm pretty sure there is a ton of Ella Fitzgerald that fits this mold but I'm not as familiar with her albums and there's a lot to sort though. So any albums with Ella or another artist similar to the ones posted above featuring a good amount of upright bass is what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance for the replies and TGIF.

Magnus

Sheila Jordan made several albums with only bass accompaniment. You can hear samples on Amazon.

If you are looking for female bass players who also sing, try Kristin Korb and Nicki Parrott.

Kristin Korb is self produced and had about 8 albums out. Plays clubs in the LA area.

I'm less familiar with Nicki Parrott and have one album, "Like a Lover" with Ken Poplowski on the SAX.

Good stuff!

And Esperanza Spalding.  A prodigy who was playing violin with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at age 5 (!), she started playing upright bass at age 14, citing Ron Carter and Dave Holland as big influences.

You won't hear many jazz standards, but mostly original compositions rooted in jazz, Brazillian, fusion, and chamber music.

Kristin Korb is just the kind of artist I was looking for. From my crappy computer speakers she sounds eerily close to Diana Krall. Thank you and keep 'em coming guys!

Esperanza Spalding was one of the first musicians I found when I started this search but she didn't do it for me.

I wouldn't say she sounds like Diana Krall. She's a really nice person. Got to meet her one time at Shutters in Santa Monica where she was playing about two years ago. Awesome bass player!

A Charlie Haden album was released in March called Sophisticated Ladies. It features Charlie Haden (acoustic bass) and Diana Krall, Melody Gardot, Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson, Renee Fleming and Ruth Cameron. You can preview it at HDTracks or Amazon.

I've got it.  J Warnes should of been on my list.  I am a fan of Wasserman's bass playing but I'd prefer if he left the singing to whomever he's playing with.

Good Night, And Good Luck - Dianne Reeves

Smokey nightclub sound. Piano, sax, standup bass and drums. Great voice and good interpretation of some classics.
