Von Schweikert VR3 speaker upgrades
« on: 14 Apr 2011, 02:19 pm »
Hi,
Big fan from Canada.  Love my Jazz, Rock & Blues:
I have an Original pair of VR3 speaks.  Using a David Berning ZH-270 tube amp with a Joule Electra 100-MK3 tube pre
Yes, I know, the VR3's are like, 15 years old now but I am wondering if there is an upgrade kit that can be found somewhere that a DYI guy could install?
I.e. caps, woofs binders etc, etc.
Or,
Is there a factory upgrade that would be worthwhile considering the age of the speakers?  I'm finding them a tad slow overall withthe the Berning and a
bit bloomy in the bass.  I love these guys but I'm afraid they might be lagging behind the rest of my system.
Is it worth upgrading them or, might I just move up the line to the VR4's?

Enjoy the Music...Rocker77

Hi Rocker,

There seems to be a cult following for the Berning ZH's but they are rarer than hen's teeth. I hope you can post your impressions of them versus other amps you have owned.

Currently I don't know if VSA has upgrades for the VR-3. I believe sometime back they did a VR-3.5. THe logical step up would be the VR-35. The specs of your amps however suggest you could climb all the way to the top of the VSA line if you so wished.

You can contact VSA at customerservice@vonschweikert.com :)

All the Best,

Jack
