MONOGRAM: Mono Phonostage based on Cornet

Instructions for building this DIY project are now online.  Monogram is an all-tube mono phono stage with variable EQ for 78s and other pre-1955 recordings.  It includes a built-in linestage with volume control, so all you need is a power amp.

The complete article and instructions (742k pdf) can be downloaded at:

Happy building!

I found several 78 LPs today. Nice solution just in hand! Thanks, Jim.

For those of you who hate tubes (yeah, right), I will soon introduce the "Bugle Pro", an opamp-based phono with the same type of variable EQ.  It will be stereo capable but with a mono switch, so you can also use it for modern playback.  No volume control.

Bugle Pro will be available as 1/2-kit; probably run you $200 total part cost.  Will include finished front and rear panels with printed graphics so your chassis will look professional.  Assembled version $395.  Available in May.

I wasn't planning on doing an octal version.  Too many other things going on.  If you make one, let us know!

Fair enough Jim
You're doing good work and I am about to build your Octal Cornet into my integrated 801A amp. The Monogram would be a stand-alone.
I guess the paralleled 12AX7 can be replaced with one section of a 6SL7 and the 12AU7s are then simply replaced by 6SL7s and that's it....

Thank you for sharing your circuits, they are a refreshing change from the endless recycles from yesteryear.

All the best

Brian  :)

Hello Jim,

I just got about 300 78's dating back to 1902.  Can you put together a monogram phono pre assembled?  I have too many project going on and I don't want to start yet another DIY project.  If so, how much?
