HIRES File through BDA-1
« on: 10 Apr 2011, 05:52 pm »
Greetings,
Currently auditioning the BDA-1 DAC for the weekend.  What a joy to listen to!

I downloaded some 88KHz/24 bit FLAC files from HDtracks to try out some hires files with the DAC.  Using Songbird on my MBP, optical out into the BDA-1.   The BDA-1 does not light up 88KHz/24 bit.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi - I have not used Songbird so no help there I am afraid but I can tell you the BDA-1 will tell you for sure what the 'native' file coming in is.  I probably get a call a week from someone who think they are listening to high resolution files and learn with the BDP-1 that in fact they are not.

My guess is the Optical out is not outputting high resolution data?  What soundcard are you using?

For many players you will need to go into Audio-Midi Setup and change the bit depth and sample rate output to match the file you are trying to play.  You will then have to close the player and reopen it for it to take effect.  You will unfortunately need to do this for each file resolution to get bit perfect output.

However, players like Pure Music and Amarra are able to automatically adjust file resolution on the fly (by bypassing Core Audio), but I am not sure about Songbird.

Thanks guys.  I downloaded a copy of Pure Music, dug into the manual, and I am off and running with hi-res files!  The BDA-1 is working flawlessly.  I will be very sad to see it go back to the dealer tomorrow.  It's been a fantastic weekend of music listening.  My system has never sounded better.

And loving hi-res files!  What a treat.
