Jasmine/Denon 103r/ Bob's SUT (300B amp)
« on: 9 Apr 2011, 09:26 pm »
I have this combination with a MMF 5 that I intend to upgrade . Anyone with this vinyl front end combination have a TT that they really think has a particular synergy with the subject (I'm not trying to start some VPI/ Rega /DD war .) I am trying to keep my upgrade to about $1500 used or new.
                                                                  Thanks Greg

The 103R is a very good cartridge and can be a truly fabulous cartridge and compete with the very best if rebodied (in say, aluminum or ebony) and retipped.

If you go that route and max out the performance of the 103R, the key to really realizing its full potential is a heavy arm, as in 25 grams of effective mass. So that means either a vintage arm (which is always a bit risky) or something like the Jelco 750D, and even the Jelco will need a bit of help with an additional 5 grams or so from a headshell weight or a heavier aftermarket headshell and the optional heavier Jelco counterweight to balance out the additional weight of the wood or aluminum body.

So, if you look at a new table, I would be looking at the 750D (or one of its longer variants if you have a table that can accomodate a longer arm) as just about the only new arm out there to bring out the best from that cartridge. The Schick arm is another possibility, but it is a 12" arm I believe and a lot more money.  Fortunately, the Jelco is very reasonably priced and you can put it on just about any table.

Seems like everyone with a 103/103R says much the same regarding arm mass. The eff mass of the 750D is 20g. The 750L is 26g, I believe.

So if you're building a new record player around the cart, you should get good results with these, or other heavy arms. There are quite a few older ones that are very well regarded, like Fidelity Research.

Thanks for the opinions and information. I,m very happy so far with the subject set up that was to a large degree selected from Audio Circle information.

Cartridge, ARM, deck.
The ARM supports the cartridge and the deck supports the arm.
That is how I consider the relationship.
I also think you should shoot as big on the arm as possible, as it will live through a few deck iterations.
Good luck.
