VSA models vs room size- horses for courses
« on: 6 Apr 2011, 06:58 pm »
could any vsa owners who have worked with more than one model report what they think the minimum size room for a certain model would be? one of the most difficult things to figure out is the right match which i think is extremely important. another factor is what kind of floor suspended or not, concrete or wood etc

Just my very subjective estimates from VSA models I've tried firsthand (area and minimum listening distance/extreme nearfield - optimum listening distance)

VR-1 -10sqm-  4 feet - 6 feet
Unifield 1 -  10sqm - 4 feet - 6 feet
VR-2 - 20sqm - 6 feet - 8 feet
VR-4jr - 20sqm - 6 feet - 9 feet
Unifield 3 -20sqm - 6 feet - 8 feet
VR-4 HSEs and SRs - 25sqm - 7 feet - 10 feet
VR-5 SE and Anniversary - 25sqm -7 feet - 10 feet
VR-9 SE - 30sqm - 9 feet - 12 feet
VR-11 SE - 50sqm - 12 feet- 15 feet

If you'll notice, my observations are dependent on first the closest you can listen with the speaker remaining coherent and then given some allowance for space around them given each particular model's pattern and physical size.

I find that the flat off axis response of VS speakers makes me require far less toe in than is usual. This results in configurations that are not equilateral. So in the case of the SRs for example, they could be 7 feet apart and generally I'd be 8 feet from either speaker or at 8 feet apart, 9 to 10 feet away.

Again this is just my subjective take on he question. I prefer a more enveloping soundscape that makes use of room reflections. YMMV.  :D

As usual Jack has given a great answer. I will chime in about system matching. I have had the JR's and now the SR MK2.5 in a 15' by 17' room. Both have worked well. I compared the Unifield 3 with the SR's and both would work well with my amp. The Unifield 3's would be a little bit better match for my room because they take up less floor space but I went with the SR's because of their efficency and resulting greater dynamics with my set amp. I would never try to shoehorn a big speaker in a very small room but In many cases what a person would want to have a speaker do in their system might be more important than the physical size of the speaker. Mabe if you would like to share your room size, system set up, and what you would like to accomplish with the speaker,  any advice given would be  more helpful.
Blessings to you in your search, Bob

thank you for your replies. i have a vr 35 in a 19x13x8 ft room that opens into a hallway with a small 12x10 room on the other side. my speakers are on the short wall so that the right speaker sees the front door some 34 ft away and the left speaker see into the 12x10 room. the main room had horrible flutter echo so i have spent the last 3 months putting up bass traps and diffusers, which are extremely powerful. all of the bass traps have been hung on the wall with picture hooks so that they can be hung and rehung easily. the treatment on the side walls have been moved many times up and down, sideways. which can cause big changes in sound which you can learn from. i would be happy to write more about the changes and what i think i learned if anyone expresses an interest.

I believe it would be a great help to many if you posted your experiences. Help even more people if you posted it in the Acoustics Circle. Please Ping us here at the VSA Circle when you do. I'm very much looking forward to reading it :)
