Stax Sigmas
« on: 2 Apr 2011, 09:14 pm »
I finally got my old Stax Sigmas going again after many years in storage courtesy of a harman/kardon PM640 integrated amp which I just purchased for the princely sum of $25 off of eBay.
I was half expecting it to catch fire but it sounds tremendous with a Sherwood S3000-III hooked up to it.
Even the stock headphone jack sounds great - I'm very impressed and quite thrilled, actually!
Here's the old beauty:

I have some old Stax SRX MK3's that had one failed channel.  Fortunately I was able to buy another such pair and swap the drivers, so I now I have a good set.  They really do sound amazingly good, in some ways better than anything else.

A fellow on audioasylum got me to do a side by side with a set of AKG 701s and the old Sigmas really roll off the high end.  Some cymbals on a Neil Young tune were just absent on the Sigmas but the AKGs just don't come anywhere close to providing that huge soundstage.
For late night listening I'll take the Stax sound every time.

Are you still using the original pads on your stax hp's? how are they for movie watching?

Everything is original although the mesh rotted away years ago.
I've never used them to watch a movie but imagine that they'd do a good job.

I have Stax Sigmas as well and they are spectacular headphones. Sound great with my Pass Aleph 30 or 6L6 pentode amp driving them using the box, and even better out of Stax SRM-1 amp.

If anyone has a set of the Sigmas, try some silver interconnects.
I made up a set and they restored the missing top end.
