I've been friggin chasing down a f_cked up software? Hardware? who the f_ck knows problem since 6 am.....I'm tired of every day fighting with my sh__t, just to hear music I can't play anymore anyway, I finally think I have the issue resolved and a great tune comes on in my playlist and as I saying awesome.. the whole signal went away, Foobar-" an Unreoverable error", Media Monkey tries playing a millisecond of every track until I reboot, except there is no sound just spastic crap.......one minute everything is fine then a sound from the DAC like it can't lock up to the signal then dead air and none of the software players willl even start...I'm done....

It is always frustrating to be your own IT admin, which is what keeps many away from PC based music systems, I am sure. Others migrate (willingly or through a negative experience such as the one you are sharing) to Apple based on this.

Subjectively it is supremely aggravating, but objectively it MAY be simple, but overlooked.

Sounds to me like you have a combination of music players, plug ins, etc. Not the recipe for a simple system.

I hope that you are able to diagnose and manage it Ed!

If your running windows XP or later, go into recovery and set the computer on a different, earlier date. This will wipe out any recent things you may have downloaded (you will lose it), but may correct the problem. The audio drivers are over-loaded, and need to have the system restored to an earlier time to rid the drivers corruption. Too many drivers on a sound card will "F" it up, Ed.

Wayner, Mark, screw this PC crap...LOL!!! I went for a walk, got a big bag of Skittles plugged my CD player into my tube integrated direct, put on "Close To The Edge"...not too loud but just right and part that sounds like your in the lagoon where they found Yoda in Star Wars, water droplet, spongie synths...OK much better now..

Ok ...I'm not doing a restore/revert because I've never had them work so looking at the "Sound" settings I have a lot and as Wayner said the PC has to be gagging on them....I disabled one and it went away so I got the following (SRS is a sound module/driver I've been using with headphones)
1) Speakers 2 -SRS HD Audio Lab
2) Speakers 2 -SRS iWow PC Ready
3) Speaker/HP Realtek High Definition Audio Ready
4) Speakers USB Audio Default Device (Big Green Checkmark its the default)

The Realtek drivers came with the VAIO Laptop and probably need to stay, I need the USB obviously I just need it to be there and not suddenly disappear. The SRS items have a startup icon group and the uninstall option.

So I use the uninstall option on the SRS and then come back into sound properties and see what might be leftover from that move and just disable any instances I see of SRS stuff left behind.

Sometimes after watching a movie through my HTPC or listening to music over my Squeezebox, I can't believe there are still people who play CD's and DVD's over stand alone players. I do everything over a network via PC and I will never go back-despite the occasional PC/network glitch. The key is not to screw it up once you get it working.

I bought the deluxe VAIO!! Actually this little 16.4" high def laptop with blu-ray drive is the nicest all around laptop I've owned. I've had Alienware, Thinkpads (2), Big ass Toshiba Satellite--needed a replacement RAM drive every couple months...this one just works and based on how much I use it 18/7week its great. When I was in the hospital, I could sit back with my modded Grado's on and watch a Blu-Ray-thats if I could get the nurses who never saw blu-ray before out of the room.......hey I got one of these little wireless keyboards coming so I can use my HDTV as the monitor...

I've been thru the same computer hell, Ed. That's how I knew what to fix. Frank wants me to put in a new HiRez driver and I'm thinking that ain't going to happen, at least not on this computer as I use it with my Korg synthesizer as part of my mini recording studio.
