I think Hailey did the best last night, although I missed her last song.

Anyone heard of any music deals the others have received (besides Pia)?

I voted at least 50 times for Scotty last night.  He did a great job with the Kenny Rogers song that the judges sucker punched him with.  I agree with USA Today that Scotty will make it to the finals and likely Lauren will go home.

You think Scotty got sucker punched?  What was with that crap that they were picking for Hailey?  You ought to know?  If you're going to pick it for her at least let her sing the real lyrics.  Scotty needs to go, IMHO.

Yes, I think the judges are trying to derail Scotty to help another female win Idol!  If he goes at least I voted for him 50 times.  I would have voted more but the phone lines stayed busy.

Scotty handled the Kenny Rogers song a lot better than Haley did Rianna, or Morrisette song. She doesn't have the depth. She shines when it fits her style, like the 1st tune which was awesome.  Haley also has an attitude that the tweenies don't like, whereas Lauren is no threat to tweenie marriage to Scotty. 11yo females (and one 50 something audiophile from North Raleigh ;) ) decide the Idol, so there is no contest.  By the end of the season they converge through peer pressure to all pick the same guy. Preferably someone who is as nice as their own daddy. When Scotty's daddy sang impromptu it sealed the deal, even his daddy is nice!

You might be right about who decides the winner...I must confess to never voting.

I'm a rocker at heart, really liked James' energy and versatility. With him gone, I'm defaulting to Haley, although, as you say, she shines when it's in her groove, but Rhiannon and You Oughta Know were not pearls. Both original artists are hard acts to follow, Stevie actually having pretty limited range,  and Morrisette's phrasing and vocal style is very unique. Like it or not, they will be the benchmarks everybody uses to judge by.

Truth be told, I don't think any of the three have the depth or versatility of some already gone, but I have to keep reminding myself that, after all, it's a popularity contest more than anyting else at this stage. History tells us that those with big promise have already been earmarked by the powers that be and have just as much possibility at a sustained music career as the last three or four.

Anybody remember Taylor Hicks? I don't know about his career now, but when I try to conjure up his performances on Idol, all I get is herky-jerky image of his spasmodic dancing :o

I agree with Peter though I have voted.  Bigfish shows us how it should be done if you support someone though.  My 4 votes I threw up before I got bored and fired up the squeezebox just won't cut it.  Scotty wins by 46 (times the afore mentioned tweenys that voted with equal enthusiasm)
Taylor who?

Agreed.  A ba-zillion tweenies + Richidoo can't be wrong, can they?  And Haley. Despite being the only one seemingly to receive any kind of criticism from the judges, I think she is still standing.  And I do have to give her props for not loosing a beat after slipping on the stairs.

I just had to look him up, cuz I couldn't put a face to the name...so yeah that old guy or the guy who should have dyed his hair to not look old.
Anyway I wish James was still around.  I agree with Peter that his energy was off the chart and I hope he can become a recording artist with a future, and not a one hit wonder.

I had James picked to win this contest and honestly did not cast a vote this year until last night. The reason I am voting for Scotty is that I can see him being a heck of a Country and Western Star.  He just has the voice and stage presence that the two girls lack.  James, however, will be like Daughtry in the past and probably be the best of the four.

Hailey, gone.  Did you see her face when Ryan announced it?  She looked pissed.

I can't believe Scotty is still in this competition.  He's a nice kid but, IMO, is the least original and least talented of the top 8.  It's also interesting that the last two people standing are from the south.  A friend (who I did not agree with at first) of mine has a theory.  He said that people from the southern part of the US will not vote for a northern contestant, but that northern voters will vote for both north and south.  This bias gives southern contestants a strong advantage.

I think James is the most talented of the bunch, and that Haley was much more intersting and talented than Scotty, but they will be watching from home.  Is there a southen bias in the voting or is it just coincidence?

Looking back, 6 of the 9 AI winners were from the south and that number was something like 6 out of 7 for the first 7 winners.  If there is no southern bias, how do you explain Taylor Hicks and Fantasia?   After this season the number will be 7 out of 10 winners - coming from a southern state.

Of course, it could have  something to do with who is selling records.  At the moment, Carrie Underwood is the only AI winner who is actually selling records and having commercial success.  The show wants another Carrie and the AI handlers might feel Scotty could be their male version if he is packaged properly.  Kelly Clarkson also sold lots of records but her career has been fading along with her record sales over the past couple years.  If Lauren loses some weight, she has a shot to sell records and achieve some fame in the Country segment, like Underwood.  She is sweet and has a good voice.

Neither of the two remaining singers interest me.  They seem like nice kids but I don't like the type of music they sing and can't see either one making a splash in the industry outside of Country music.  If they don't achieve commercial success, AI is in trouble.  The whole premise of the show is to find America's "Next Star" and that means selling records and packing stadiums.  At the moment, Carrie Underwood is the only one doing this and several recent winners have been dropped from their recording contracts due to poor sales.  Regardles of who wins this year, I don't see that trend changing.

Cheers,

Jack

I agree with Jack.  While good singers they are not broad enough for my tastes.  The other singers were pushed outside there strengths but the country singers keep the same drone.
Interesting take on the southern vote.
I would buy a cd from Hailey, Pia or James but not from Scotty or Lauren.

I thought Hailey and Casey were the best and least ordinary singers (for American Idol) of the bunch.  Hailey's cover of What is and What Should Never be just rocked.

I would probably purchase a CD of Hailey's as well.

Best,

American Idol is purely entertainment and we Americans are hooked on the show.  The so called Judges are a joke in that you know what they are going to say after each contestant.  Randy Jackson " X, Y, Z is in it to win it."  Give me a freaking break!  The judges could help direct America into the top two or three singers each season but once they make it to the final 10 it is a love fest!  They should have given James some guidance to cut back on some of the screaming to appeal to a wider audience.  No doubt he was the most talented of the top 10 and should have been in the finals.

I have no idea if it is a Southern thing with American Idol.  I do believe that Rich is correct in that the teens are selecting the winners.  In past years I voted weekly but Wednesday was my first night of voting this year.  The final two may never have any commercial success but we also need to remember they are only 17!

From the mind of the typical Idol voter:

"Hailey is a threat, she has to go. She is too pretty and confident and Scotty might like her. But I feel no threat from the fat insecure naive Lauren. I can intimidate her into staying away from Scotty. Did you know Scotty is a SENIOR!  OMG <333"

I agree with Ed.  Casey and Hailey were my picks, and the only two I would consider buying an album from.  Though James had some spirit.

The Judges are lame...  Sure Jennifer is nice to look at, but the only thing Steven ever says is "that was beautiful, man really beautiful," and Randy can't even come up with his own catch phrase.  "In it to win it"  isn't that from that obnoxious douchebag from the food channel that is now a gameshow host???  Also, I have had about enough of that Jimmy Iovine dude.  That guy may be a successful producer but.... what a worm!

Richidoo is right about the tweeners being the voting force...  There have been some good moments this season, but I will probably skip the finale.  Chubby white girl vs. effeminate country kid...  yeah I'll pass.

I liked Jimmy Iovine.  I thought he was the only one the contestants could turn to to get some honest advice.

My wife and I had a little game going on each time Jackson said someone was in it to win it...

That's pretty good there.  Having 5 nieces I hear and read about the "process".   :duh:

Did you come up with that yourself?  Impressive!   :thumb:

Well...we're down to the nitty gritty..and I don't care who wins now.   :|
It was one of my favorite season admittedly, hopefully next will be just as entertaining.
