We got a bit of ice today, so with my long commute I'm taking the day off to spin CDs that I just received through the mail.   :thumb:

Listening to some Keith Jarrett right now, nice!

Almost done now, but I figure about a foot of the heavy stuff, heart-attack snow is what we call it here in Minnesota. I think Wisconsin and Illinois are getting it too.

A friend called me a 6:30 am and asked for help as her car was stuck in the middle of the street, about 1 house down. I can't figure out how she got out of the driveway, let alone, down the street. Needless to say, we got the car out of the middle of the street, but not out of the snowplow's path. I think I will be getting another call for snow shoveling duties (she is 75).

In the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula we've enjoyed a "wintry mix" (a snow/ice/rain mess) and it's been near freezing all day.  So the robins (that arrived 10 days ago) are scrambling to find food and nest building materials.  We have ice on roadways, snow on fields/lawns, and runoff at all the low points (previously we'd avoided the usual heavy spring runoff due to heavy snow accummulation and the ground didn't freeze).

Last month we had the 300 foot gravel drive plowed 7 times.  The previous annual record was 8.   :(  At least we have nothing to shovel/plow.

I'll tell you it wasn't much fun driving to work from Saint Louis Park to Plymouth this morning. Couldn't believe it was happening after the kind of weather we've had over the last two weeks. I've lived in Minnesota for the last 11 years and will finally be leaving for a couple of years this fall. I can't say I'll miss the snow.

True BUT this year it keeps coming back! I've lived in Minnesota for over 50 years and I can only remember one other winter this bad. It's not going to be above freezing until next week. Our highs are lower than our average lows. The only saving ghrace has been the audio rig. Got lots of long listening sessions in this winter  :)

Do you care to share what you all do for a living that when there's a little snow, you all get to stay home?

Well, it was a bit more than a little snow. Usually if it's 6" or less I'll go in. Otherwise it's the traffic (time) and not the depth that dictates whether to go or stay home. I can telecommute. I log into the network and the clients don't really care where I am - I'm just a voice on the phone. I'm a Market Manager for a manufacturing firm and a broadcast engineer. We design and sell copper and fiber interconnect products to all the major networks worldwide (ESPN, ABC, CBS, NBC, Turner, BBC, TV Globo, NHK and on and on)

I'm an engineer and about half the time am in the office.  As I work semi-independently of others and have been in the same job for over 25 years, I have lots of vacation time and decent flexibility.  So I plan on using about a week's worth for snow days each year (my commutes are 75 miles each day).

If it were me, I'll be sitting on the beach somewhere, and not go in regardless what the weather is like.

Vacation time is not supposed to be spent at home when get snowed in. Companies should give people the day off during heavy snow. Unfortunately, most companies only allow you to be late, but not absent during heavy snow.

Our company's policy is to make every attempt to be at work during heavy snow storm, if the freeway's closed, go there and check every 30 minutes or so and see when it'd be open.  Employee's safety is not their primary concern. I know someone who got stuck behind a jack knifed semi on the freeway for two hours during a snow storm, just because the company said he had to show up for work.

Hope it's short lived guys. I remember being stuck in a 16"+ dumping 1st week of April '69, Schererville, after a breakdown & then they closed I-65 from Lake Michigan to Lafayette. No fun anytime, moreso in 'Spring'.

Wish I got to stay at home. Funny thing is I used up a sick day on Monday, when it didn't really count. That should teach me.

Sheesh. All that white stuff is giving me flashbacks of my days in Iowa. Gotta love Phoenix, the only white stuff I see is on my margarita glass!! :D
