Well worth the time
« on: 14 Mar 2011, 10:10 pm »
I spent the past two days retoring the woofers of these speakers in the honor of the people who made them 30 years ago.

By a company that no longer exists. Great sounding speakers, the company believed in simple crossover, one cap and one coil, that's it. MOst of the engineering went into the component design,. They came with the speaker's own freq resp. graphe with life time waranty.

Now I am curious, I just saw a pair of the Genesis II at the local goodwill for $20 USD with green surrounds and all.  The foam around the woofer and passive crumbled when I touched it, but the cabinets looked good.  The grills needed to be redone, but it may be worth the effort since you can get the parts at http://www.humanspeakers.com/genesis/
Now I just have to ask myself do I need another pair of speakers

For $20, I would get them, and restore them just for fun. The one I posted here is a G1+, I have another pair of Genesis 20 with the passive radiators, though they are the later production without the green foam surrounds. I also have a pair of smaller Genesis 110. These are good speakers designed by the engineers that used to work for Epicure/ Advent. The company went bankrupt in 1986 just when they were about to launch their newest line of speakers, I don't remember the model numbers, but they all had attractive oak wood veneer, and angled side to reduce cabinet refraction.

I will have to go back this weekend and do a double take.  If the cabinet veneers can be cleaned up (light sanding and re-stained) I will pick them up.  I was hesitant at first because of the passive radiator, I always thought of that as kind of a gimmick especially in the 80's.  There is also a pair of Acoustic Research AR-2's, but they look terrible.  Cabinets are bad (painted black), grills are ugly, and they have the dual mid-range/tweeter angled configuration.  A lot of work involved.

As I remember, Genesis made all their speaker components in house, fully tested to spec. unlike most speaker manufacturers nowaday, sourcing their parts form Vifa, Sea or whatever. I can't name too many speaker companies that made their own parts, other than Bozak, KLH, Advent, Epicure, Genesis.

Another sucessful speaker restoration project. This is a pair of Advent\1. I haven't heard any new highend speakers in a long while, but this one beats many old highend speakers that I have, and I wouldn't be surprised that they will beat some new highend speakers in a side by side listening test. I have not change out any part in the crossover yet, I don't think I need to at this time.
