ART DIO - what was yours like when you first got it?

Hi guys, I recently...
ok make that a few months ago now

got an ART DIO and found that in totally stock form it lacks in clarity, sort of a bit muddled in sound. very hard to describe, but far less analytical than I am used to.
Is this 'normal' or indicative of a stock DIO?

Definitely mod it. In stock form it's nother special. In modded form it's one of the best DAC's you can get for less than $1000 (some would say more). Here's some info that might help.
