Panasonic SA-XR10 - using as preamp (sort of)
« on: 26 Mar 2004, 05:13 pm »
After reading much good stuff about these Panasonic receivers I went out and listened to one at Rex Audio, then, purchased one on ebay for $119 total with shipping.  Being a tube amp guy this will be a real change for me but I wanted to make our stereo setup friendlier for my wife and able to do home theater.

So...my plan is to use the XR10's built in surround amps for the rear L-R and center channel, and then hook a stereo tube power amp to the front audio out on XR10 for the main speakers.

Anyway, I think this will work, otherwise I may need to add another audio output to the unit somehow.

Thoughts?

hmmm... I wonder if I have made a mistake?

I see the XR45 has a "second audio out" for connecting to another amplifier.  I wonder if I have misread what connections are available on the XR-10.  How hard would it be to add another audio out if indeed it does not have one that I could use for my main speakers?

Thanks,

Sean

probably pretty hard as you would need to tap into the digital circuit and add a DAC since this receiver doesn't have a DAC for analog outputs.   Even the XR45 has passive analog outputs (no volume control).

hmmm, doesn't this have an audio out to go to a VCR?  Couldn't that feed the power amp?

It could but I'd doubt that it would have volume control to it.

ohhh... I see what you are saying

Do I have any other options for doing this?  I guess what I need is a preamp out which has volume control?  OK... I have not been thinking correctly about this.  But it seems like, if I could do this, this XR10 would be a nice preamp, no?  Would make my wife much happier with our audio setup.

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing how this receiver works.  Just as an FYI, I have emails in to Panasonic and TI regarding if it is possible to mod this unit (voiding warranty of course) to have a preamp in/out (for connecting an Ultracurve or similiar) and and a preamp out for hooking an external power amp i.e. using the SA-XR10 as a preamp.

I'll let you know what I find out.
