WTB: Small stereo receiver with remote.
« on: 13 Mar 2011, 09:36 pm »
I am looking for a small, remote controlled stereo receiver for a disabled family member. My brother recently moved into a very small apartment in a facility for elderly / disabled people. He lives on Social Security and I have been trying to set him up with the things he needs in his apartment. Of course, as far as I'm concerned, he needs music. I have a DVD player and a pair of speakers that I intend to take down on my next visit and I'm looking for a small, remote controlled receiver for him. He is not an Audiophile by any means and I am not looking for anything fancy. In fact, the smaller and simpler, the better. A remote is important. He has a rare blood cancer that destroys blood cells in bones. He is in a wheelchair and getting around is not easy for him. If anyone has a suitable receiver sitting around collecting dust, I'd be happy to buy for a good price. Please send me a PM.

NAD 701 is a good piece.  I have several all over the house, but you MAY have to push a button on the unit to change from CD to FM.  Don't remember.

Good for you to do this.

I don't know how much you want to spend but you can get a Sony Micro System for $120 and then swap out the speakers if you want better ones. For $200 you can get an Onkyo system from JandR.

$300 gets you a mini system from Denon or Yamaha or possibly a small Teac Receiver. $400 gets you a mini NAD with built in CD player.

Check out your local Costco or Walmart for cheap stereo shelf system options.

The bigger challenge is the remote. They all have tiny buttons and lots of functions. Perhaps the Doro 321RC remote control would work. You use the receiver remote control to program the volume up/down and channel up/down buttons on the Doro to the functions you want. But that's all you can do with it.

Sherwood makes a stereo receiver that is not terrribly large.  I bought one years back.  I noticed that HHGregg sells it.  Probably less than $100
