AMD Bulldozer
« on: 11 Mar 2011, 05:14 am »
Anyone else interested in the next/latest CPU from AMD?  Basically, it will be the first completely new architecture in a long, long time.  First CPUs (8-core) are supposed to come out next month.

I am tempted to upgrade in about 6-months.  It will be used for music recording/mixing/production of my own home-brewed tunes (along with occasional gaming), so the 8-cores should help (mainly with the music aspect).  Currently have a fairly new overclocked (to 3.8 MHz) AMD 6-core 1055T system, which is no slouch.

No one? :dunno:

I can't wait to see what this beast will do.  Overclocked, my currently processor competes with or bests some of Intel's top chips, which cost over 3 times what my chip cost.  Here's a Wiki on it: Bulldozer.

I've been an AMD fan for a long time.  I don't have a need to upgrade right now but that looks like a real screamer.  Wonder what the pricing will be like.

It's performed great for me.  No complaints.  Again, I do have it overclocked and have good, fast memory (and motherboard), too.  Even when it was not overclocked, it performed great.

However, why not wait a little bit and look into the new chips.  They are supposed to come out in April.  You can either get one of those. . .or if you choose, get a discounted 6-core when the new chips hit.  That would be a full upgrade (motherboard and possibly memory, though).

Depending on which 4-core CPU you have, you may not see much of an improvement with the current 6-cores, however.  Not too many programs use that many cores.  However, you will see multi-tasking improvement (allowing more/better mult-multi tasking ).

You'll need a new board if you plan to upgrade to one of this, since it will be am3+

But, release date?

Thanks Paul, your suggestion makes sense to me. I will wait a bit more.

I've been using only AMD ever since i started to assemble my PCs. Just last week i built a HTPC using Phenom x4 970, and an MSI 890GX mobo in a silverstone GD04 case.
However, my main PC is a couple of years old ... and i might look into the new series sometime later this year.

i remember when i upgraded my dual core desktop with a 4 cores amd. It was a nice investment, for the price ...performance was okay. Specially on games.  :P

My first DIY had a Cyrix 120 MHz CPU, everything I built after that used AMD. I loved the performance I could get out of the K-7 processor. It was so easy to overclock it wasn't funny. Overclocked with good cooling it was amazing.

I found out my MB is compatible with the AM3+ socket (Bulldozer), even though it is ~1-year old.  Just need to flash the BIOS.  ASUS planned ahead on this one.  However, of course, my MB still has the older chipset vs. the new one that will be released with new AM3+ MBs. (I have the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula MB).  This way, I can update the CPU soon and just wait awhile on upgrading the MB.

Looks like Bulldozer will be released June 7th.  I'm very curious as to what its performance and cost will be.

Bulldozer has been delayed.  Should now come out between July and September.
