Help expand my jazz collection
« on: 9 Mar 2011, 07:10 pm »
I have pretty wide jazz tastes but lately I've been wearing out my copy of "She Was Too Good To Me" by Chet Baker. I like the "Sunday morning sit back, read the paper and relax" attitude of it. It's nice to have on as background music when you're working on something else and not have to analyze just what the heck Coltrane meant by that last crazy run of whatever.

Unfortunately, I don't have much of this type of jazz in my collection. I have a little Stan Getz and Bill Evans but was hoping that some of you could direct me to some other artists/cd's of this nature.

Thanks,

Doug

Some mellow guys I would recommend are: Art Farmer, Charles Lloyd, Tord Gustavsen, Stefano Bollani, Joshua Redman for starters.

Get yourself a subscription to Jazziz, and you'll get some great sampler discs.

Also, do you have internal radio connected to your system?

Lots of great Jazz stations out there on the web.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. There are some I've heard, and some that are brand new to me. I'll be checking them all out in the next day or two. I can stream from my Duet so I'll tune in to some stations.

Steve, I've heard of J. Redman but those others will open a whole new door for me.

To name a few:

Oscar Peterson - Night Train
Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights
Amhad Jamal - Live at the Pershing
Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert, Standards

If you go to www.allmusic.com you can punch in an artist, see all of their mood,s styles, and similar artists and see top albums and songs of a particular mood or style. Very cool stuff.

Jazz standars by the famous trio(tenor, piano, a-bass), recorded in 1958, stellar performances.

Another good one:
Electric Jazz with full horns and strings sections, the best album on CTI Records catalogue IMO.
Perfomed by a bunch of newbies musicians as:
Me.Eumir Deodato/keyboards, John Tropea/e-guitar, Jeff Berliner/e-guitar, Ron Carter/a-bass, Stanley Clarke/e-bass, Billy Cobham/drums, Airto Morreira/percussion, Ray Barreto/congas and others.
Great sound quality, recorded at Rudy Van Gelder studios, Sep1972.

It's funny you mention this. I was on their website just the other day. I have a couple other non-jazz titles from them the I really like and was looking for some new stuff.

These have all been mentioned, but as a "laid back jazz kinda fella", I'd put an exclamation mark by these guys. All of which are instrumentals.

Tord Gustavsen
Ben Webster
Amhad Jamal

And a new one for the list:
Count Basie - Specifically the XRCD of "88 Basie Street"

You can't go wrong with the Oscar Peterson Trio or Oscar's few solo works.

I've got some Oscar with Big Bands, but it's not very mellow.  Swingin' Brass with the Oscar Peterson trio is from '59 and it features the Russ Garcia big-band.  It's fairly up-tempo and rockin'.
