SME 3009 Tonearm. Which one for modern MC cart?
« on: 7 Mar 2011, 10:05 pm »
Hey!

I'm planning to get a SME 3009 arm in the near future. I don't know much about these vintage arms and there are difference versions of these arm, 3009, 3009 II, 3009 Improved and etc.

I'm very confuse about this.... but noticed that 3009 Improved version seems to be more common.  So, which one will be a good match for modern MC carts? I'm not in a rush but will be good to know what I should keep my eyes open for. :D

BTW.... my current arm is Rega RB250 with Benz Micro ACE  (1st version) high output MC cart. I'm likely will be using this cart with the SME 3009.

Take care,

If you are having no compliance issues with the cart on the Rega arm, you shouldn't have any issues with the SME arm.  Look for an SME with the damping troughs. In some cases, a drop of 500,000cst on the knife bearings helps as well.

Hey!

I see.... I was worry since I think each version have different mass and I think most are lighter than the Rega RB250.

Well, the 3009 Improved version seems very common so I think I will keep my eyes open for it than. Thanks.

hallo,

the 3009 to get, if you want to use the Benz ACE, would be the one with removable headshell.
this has an eff. mass of 9,5g as opposed to the 6,5g for the version with the fixed headshell.
as BM pointed out, get an FD 200 damping unit for taming any nasties.
a heavier arm would be better but the FD 200 helps here.

regards,
bas
