What is the difference between the 5y3 and 6106
« on: 7 Mar 2011, 04:25 am »
Hello,

I recently purchased a Cornet2 off of audiogon. It came with both a 6106 and a 5y3. To my ears the 6106 is much more dynamic with better bass slam. However, are they considered identical tubes? Is there something that should be adjusted within the system to accommodate the 6106? I read something about adjusting B+ voltage, but I have no idea what this means, as I did not put the unit together, and really know nothing about DIY electronics.

Your help is greatly appreciated  :)

They are not differ much, so you can use the 6106 in the Cornet 2 without any modifictions.

While we're on the subject of the rectifier...will a standard 5Y3GT (not indirectly heated) harm anything if used in the Cornet 2?

In a word - no.  I settled on the 5Y3GT after trying a number of other rectifiers.  The B+ does come up quickly, in a few seconds, with a directly heated rectifier.  But I've noticed no problems.

The Sovtec 5y3gt that Jim specifies in the parts list does behave differently from a typical 5y3. It takes 20 seconds or so (never really timed it) as opposed to 1-2 seconds that the NOS RCA 5y3gt I have takes to change the led from red to green.

Someone has previously pointed out that the resulting voltages are slightly different also.

I went back to the slow starting Mazda 5Y3GB anyway. It sounds better.
