Opinions Wanted
« on: 6 Mar 2011, 06:07 pm »
Hey,
I've been away from audiophile for 20 years.

I have a 3B that's been tuned up in the past year but
I've had it for 21-22 yrs. I'm looking at a new pre-amp since my
current one is worn out. (2 of them actually wore out)

Of the 2 below could I have some opinions, if this isnt too
far below you guys audio range :)

nad c326bee integrated
(edit: Iwould use the pre-out on this to the 3b)

Emotiva usp1

I'd go with the NAD.

I haven't heard either but you might also add Parasound Classic 2100 or zPre3, Rotel RC-1550 to your list along with NAD's C-165 BEE.   Then of course there is the BP-6 with a 20 year warranty.

Might also check audiogon or see if any local stereo shops have demo or closeout deals.

I'd go with the NAD.

Go NAD ?  :D
Wow ! I'll bet no one's ever panned that little nugget of comedy gold before...
But seriously, folks...unless you are able to hear both options and develop a preference that way, I'd probably suggest the NAD as well. A good used preamp would certainly also be worth considering...

I suggest you consider a Bryston .5B pre-amp.

Me I would look into the Nightshade Beacon preamp and sweeten up that older Bryston. If you upgrade the 3B amp to the SST series than a Bryston .5 pre would seem like a VG choice.
Or just sell the 3B and look into a Bryston intergrated.

Yep, or a BP6.

Emotiva is a brand that i would stay away from.....ive heard a few models from them and to me they all sounded as good as a $600 HK HT amp from a Big Box store .....nothing to write home about at all...........NAD is a league ahead of Emotiva IMHO.

I used to own a NAD C160 preamp, and at another time, I had a NAD C350 integrated. Neither one had a very good preamp stage. Not sure what your expectations are, but neither is the same level of your Bryston.

I'd probably suggest a low cost tube preamp to warm up the 3B just a little bit.

I'd definitely stay away from NAD. I made the mistake a few years ago and bought one of their bigger amps for my spare room. I had to get the same model replaced THREE TIMES before I gave up. My dealer said something about a"Bad Batch",(Whatever that means.) Not long after,I took a chance and bought a NAD CD player. Same deal-defective. NAD even sent out a memo to the dealers on how to fix this issue with the CD Players after customers bought them.
Keep in mind,I spent over $800.00 for all this gear with my local dealer. Even though I'd been a customer of his for over 20 years,he treated me like I was crazy because I kept returning the NAD stuff with issues. Needles to say, I don't do business with this dealer anymore.( I hope he enjoyed my money, because I'll  never give him any more of it.)
The fact that internet retailers are able to sell NAD as "Refurbished" says something about the quality.
That is why I went back to owning Bryston. Even the older stuff is great, and has a lot of life in it,if it was properly cared for.

I will never own Nad.I will always own Bryston.
I bought a Nad CD player...The display broke,had it fixed,it broke again.
A guy brought his Nad integrated to the house, left channel stopped working as soon as he set it up,was working fine he said once he left his house.
So no thank you Nad.

I feel the same about NAD. They're going cheap somewhere. An aquaintance of mine had the exact same issue with an amp AND a cd player.!  :shake:

I find it amazing that a company like NAD allows some of it's electronics to have such a high rate  of failures.Even if it's only a 5% rate of failures, that's no comfort if you own one of the defective ones.
Granted ,they are not like Bryston,(who builds all thier gear in one place in Canada by hand),but still NAD has had some serious quality control issues with the Chinese factories who build their gear. The parts-quality is terrible. I imagine that NAD must design something and then have it go out to the lowest bidders. In the past, their products were made  in Japan, and then Taiwan. (I'd rather have the older NAD's made in these places instead of the Chinese-made products that they now are selling to buyers.)
They never even replied to an e-mail I sent to them when my NAD amp was giving me all that trouble.
Well, I guess the old saying is true about getting what you pay for..
That being said, for the same money that brand-new NAD Electronics would cost you, I'd suggest buying used Bryston products instead. The warranty that Bryston offers is great, but I wouldn't be too concerned, the stuff rarely breaks down. Even when it does,Bryston Service will  address the issue promptly.
Used Bryston is getting harder to find for this reason alone. People who own Bryston tend to be loyal customers for many years.

Interesting comments about NADs' current quality.  Maybe look for an older piece.

In one of my systems I have a 7150/2150 bi-amped that I've owned since new.  I've had some maintenance done (once due to a lightning strike), but given they are almost 30 years old I'm very happy with them.

Funny thing about NAD. In the '90s till just awhile ago they were a bargain audiophile favorite due to some favorable reviews in Stereophile by Corey Greenberg (Go NAD!). At the time I started looking for other views about NAD. On the Microsoft usenets there was a guy who ran a repair facility somewhere in the midwest decrying the cheesy nature of NADs build quality and dreaded when one would come in the door. Thats all it took for me to rule them out, but I refrained from cautioning anyone about this because anyone who did was shouted down for being a elitist snob. All this is a preface for the statement: don't buy Emotiva either. If you're looking for a bargain pre then find a Pioneer reciever with a pre out. Best case scenario is to see if you can get along with a passive or a buffer.

Any one have views on Adcom. I had the 535 amp (1993) and at that time the 555 was the one to get. I got involved with Bryston and never looked back but my little Adcom was quite good (and dependable). :cyclops:

I still have an Adcom 555 II that I bought in 1992.  I have it hooked up to the RCA output of my BP-26 and use it to drive outdoor speakers on my patio.  It still works great and has never had any problem and looks just like it did when new.

I never liked NAD. Even back in the 80s I thought the build quality and the sound were second-rate at best.

Sure, Vegas but remember the price point of that NAD gear - we're not talkin' about your 4B here, we're talkin' entry-level hi-fi and in the 80's that NAD stuff was no cheesier or worse-sounding than alot of the other gear at that price-point. It was the gateway drug that got a lot of people hooked on this terrible addiction. The rubber buttons were kind of ...odd, though...

Fair enough. But, he's better off with a used Bryston preamp! :D
