Bass and concrete walls, floors, etc.
« on: 6 Mar 2011, 03:36 pm »
I read in one of posts that the person was having problems with bass in his room.   He mentioned that his room
had brick walls, concrete floor, etc.   This works great for containing sound, but makes hit extremely difficult to
get bass that is defined, boom free, and with a good RT-60 decay.  In this situation it will require even more bass
traps than a room with wood walls and drywall.   Basements, in my opinion, are too difficult for realistic, fast
decaying bass, and for that reason I built my room upstairs where bass can escape to the outside.  Even so I
still use a lot of bass trapping (36 ASC tube traps, and many other home made bass traps to get great, detailed,
and a wonderful RT-60 decay.   My entire ceiling acts as a membrane absorber for very low bass and also
helps a great deal.   Also the more powerful and deep reaching the speakers are the more bass traps one needs.
My system goes down to 1 hz with a Eminent Technolgy rotary woofer, so I needed a room with a very large
number of bass traps and other means to dissipate all this bass.   So concrete walls, floors are good for containing
bass, but it makes it very difficult to get bass that decays quickly.
