Tekton + Decware = Crazy?
« on: 3 Mar 2011, 12:36 am »
My current system can kick your system's ass  :peek: so why would I even consider an overall change? I dunno. These days of scraping together cash for this and that with no end in sight to this bad economy got me wondering ...

Sell my mains, one of two subs, and amps (keeping CDP, pre, and one sub) and replace with a pair of Tekton Lore driven by a pair of Decware SE84C+ ... crazy idea? That should leave me with around $2k in pocket (plus savings from lower heat output by amps and less electricity used). Maybe even sell pre and other sub since CDP has volume control and Lores appear they may go low enough for 2-channel music (maybe/maybe).

Anyone hear this combo (Lore and SE84C+) or any Decware with Tekton?

Am I crazy?
Should I be stopped?

Can't speak for the Tektons but the Decware SE84 is special.  Not that last word in the bottom end detail but midrange magic with a very large 3 dimensional soundstage.  The Decware prefers a low impedance load so anything less than 8 ohms is preferable.  There is a company called Parker Audio that builds some very low impedance speakers, some of them as low as 2 ohms specifically designed for the Decware amps.  Haven't heard them but they supposed to be nice.

Living in SLC, I thought I would visit Eric and check out the Lores.  I'm putting together a second system and want to go SET (probably 2a3) with high efficiency speakers.  I'm going to take my Shindo Montille (El84) down there and hear what they can do.

I have met Eric and own a smaller pair of speakers of his and can only say great things about my experience so far!

I'm now driving my Bastanis Prometheus speakers with a SE84ZS (better enclosure with wood base, alps blue volume pot and V-caps); it is a remarkable little amp with speed, clarity and resolution that I wasn't expecting from a SET.

The speakers are around 100dB/W so I would suspect you would need to bridge two of them if you like volume. Once you have them, your shindo better watch it's back.

Yes you are crazy. No you should not be stopped.
I have the Decware Z1 Kit, which I believe is a PCB kit version of the PtP hand wired amp you are considering.
I have Tekton Katz Meow (2010 version) and Zu Omens (and Klipschorns, but that's another animal all together).
The Decware does both pairs of speakers justice. I also have a DIY 2A3 amp (based on the WE91A circuit) and a DIY 6L6 kit (Elekit TU-879). They all play great. It depends on what you like, how big your room is. If the main thing you want from your system is very loud rock and/or a big room, you may want to look at a little more power. Most of my listening is either late night or early morning so these low power amps and Hi Eff speakers are perfect. Not to say that I can't rock with these combos, but if loud rock was the main thing I was after I would probably be happier with something else.
I do recommend that you try to listen to some type of flea / Hi Eff combo if you've never heard it before, before you sell the farm and go down that path.

Nice Set-up.....Lores look much better in your photos than on their own website!  I'm glad you're enjoying them so much.  I used to have the Monitor Audio GS 10's and the 60's.   These high Efficiency speakers blow them away in every aspect IMO also.  I bet the Lores are not that different than the Omen's that I have.   I would love to hear them sometime.

I have the Lores and I can promise you if the low 30's is low enough for your musical taste, then they can do it all.
I replaced some Monitor Audio RS6's with the Lore and they outperform the previous speaker in every way.
I'm driving them with an Almarro A318B amp and my front end (for now) is an Emotiva ERC-1 CD player. The sound is Very good. Depth, imaging, soundstage are all very nice. Looks on the other hand, go with something other than black. The fit and finnish is very good, but they aren't the prettiest speaker I've ever seen.
Is it ok to be talking about speakers on a tube circle.
Here's a photo of my set-up.

Sounds like fun, but would it provide long term satisfaction?

From my audio and car experiences of going backwards, the answer would be mostly no.

Seems like you've just got an itch for a new toy.

Dan,
I sincerely doubt a Decware amp is a step back. Come over and listen to the Torii mk III and you will be a believer. Steve makes phenomenal amps.
