Soundtrack for dealing with tragic loss?
« on: 2 Mar 2011, 04:42 pm »
Here is the deal...

My estranged wife (Felicia) lost her 8.5-month-pregnant-35-year-old sister a couple weeks ago in a tragic car crash.  For the most part, her family and her brother-in-law are handling it in a healthy fashion, but Felicia not so much.  She is mucho depressed.

I believe music can be a great healer and she is very moved by music.  I was thinking of putting together a CD of music that might resonate with her.   I am looking to get suggetions.

Her music tastes run from '80s (not really the best here) to modern rock, indy rock, to classical (big into beethoven) to dance music and lots in between.  Its more about great music.

Any suggestions?

I'll start...
I know she likes Evanescence and sarah mclachlan

My Immortal by Evanescence
sarah mclachlan - i will remember you & Angel

Josh Groban - Remember Me
James Taylor - Fire & Rain

Eric Clapton's No Tears in Heaven is a little overdone but could be added.

Crowded House's Time On Earth has some deeply moving moments focused on death & loss.  Neil Finn's songwriting reflects the turmoil and loss surrounding the suicide of drummer Paul Hester.  Silent House is particularly gripping.

On the classical side there's the final movement of Mahler's 9th, Gorecki's 3rd Symphony (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs), and Telarc's Celesital Gate CD of Alan Hovhaness' works.

She likes Beethoven.  Then she may already know what is arguably the best "Mass" ever written, Missa Solemnis.

My oldest brother passed away 10/11/10. I was able to spend a few days with him at the hospice before he passed. I had bought with me a Sansa Clip+ loaded with complete Beatles remasters and played that though the boombox that was in the room. I got many compliments on the music as people came to visit.

Get her the sound track from the movie "City of Angles". It has Sarah Mclachlan (Angle), U2 (If God will send His Angles), Peter Gabriel (I Grieve), Jude (I know) and a whole bunch more. One of the best sound tracks I've heard in some time and very fitting for the occasion. It will make her very emotional, but perhaps that is what is needed.

Since she likes Beethoven, his String Quartet Op. 132 has a beautiful passage in the middle movement where Beethoven thanks God for seeing him through a serious illness. The music is transcendent. This could help her mental state.

Faure's Requiem - has a memorable part to it which just evokes images of ascension

Grieg's Piano Concerto - A happy concerto.

Why? There will be light at the end, it may just take a bit of time to get there.

I'm sorry for your/her loss.  Slow movements of Beethoven's 3rd, 5th, and 7th symphonies would all be appropriate.

Sanctus: Benedictus in Missa Solemnis.

Whether you believe in the premise or not, it is an uplifting music for those in need of a spiritual boost.

P.S.  Can you see that he wrote this late in his life along with the 9th Symphony?

Sorry to learn of your loss, Josh.

I find Gorecki's #3 very soothing; it's a pacifying piece for the aching soul.

Natalie Merchant - When they ring the golden bells.

I'd like this one played at my own service in time, I think it is a fantastic song that is fitting of the circumstances.

Josh,

Sorry to hear of your loss.

When my mom died a few years ago, my brother and I set a slide show of pictures of her life to Pat Metheny's You from Speaking of Now. That song still sends chills up my spine when I listen to it. It is hauntingly beautiful. It goes from sad and solemn to joyous and uplifting.

The sample on Amazon is pretty indicative of one of the uplifting portions of the song.
