Matching tonearm and cartridge?
« on: 20 Feb 2011, 02:27 pm »
can someone dumb down the concept of matching cartridges to tonearms.  What makes a tonearm high or low mass?  How can you predict from specs what cartridge will match well with what tonearm.  My current set up is a Basis 1400 with a Rega RB900 arm.  I am currently using a Benz Glider, but this cartridge is 8 or 9 years old and a change could be imminent. Thanks in advance for any help. I have googled this subject, but the resources I have found have not been user friendly.

I'm no expert, but have found this helpful. http://www.theanalogdept.com/cartridge___arm_matching.htm

Here is a user friendly reference:

http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/tonearmcartridge.html

At 11grams, the RB900 is considered a moderate mass arm. Information in the link above states:

* Moderate mass tonearms are good companions for moderate to low compliance cartridges.

I have a modified Rega RB300 arm and Dynavector 10X4 MKII cartridge which I enjoy.  If you like the sound of your current combination you could always pick up a new Glider, it's a great cartridge.  You can also get a reduced price at most dealers with a trade in of your old glider.

11g is considered at the low mass end of the medium mass arm range... (mid mass is from around 10 to around 25g effective mass)

At that mass you can probably handle cartridges with quite a high compliance (perhaps 35cu - which would have a resonant Frequency of 8.1hz) - but ideal compliance match would be somewhat lower - 23cu gives the "perfect" 10Hz.

The Benz MC's tend to be around 15cu - and for that arm 14cu is about the lower limit (13Hz resonant Frequency) - any lower than that and the resonance will start impacting on the audible range.

If your arm has a fluid damping option, that would extend the viable range both up and down by damping those resonances.

But like most "rules" there are plenty of examples of good sound while breaking the rules.

With the arm at an effective mass of 11g (assuming that is correct) - the arm is perfect for pretty much any of the MM/MI designs of the last 40 years (including very top end designs like the AT20SS, Empire 4000D, Shure V15V, ADC XLM/ZLM etc...)

It will also work well with the higher compliance end of the MC spectrum....

You probably won't get the best from lower compliance MC's without adding mass to the system. (which is of course easier than removing mass from the system - the quandary in which I am!!)

bye for now

I don't think I can add anything about matching your arm for resonance. Just as important, sound quality should compliment both the arm and your system. I'd guess that your Glider is a very nice match and probably sounds great. The newer S series Benz are said to be a significant improvement. I believe trade in is $750 for an older Glider to a new one. There are some well thought of carts in that price range.
