I wish I knew someone with a good system, a back yard and a paella pan

Oh man.  I should never have done a back to back comparison of my class d with your DIY class a.  Now I want a new amp.  You know, I might be willing to put up with the fact that you could almost cook paella on on amp as long as it sounds that sweet.

I think it may have been unfair using the XLR to RCA connectors.

I don't think it was the cables.  That particular amp uses a TAS5630 chip, and is not as refined as some of the other Class D offerings.  The input impedance was probably not well matched and as a result, it was audibly deficient over the high end of the frequency spectrum. An appropriate input buffer might make a difference.

Dammit, Doug, as much as I prefer sts9fan's answer I think you're probably right.  I will say, though, the class D amp's mojo really is better in my system -- it was even less bad with maggies.  It's almost as if sound quality is inversely proportional to speaker sensitivity.
