Listening to it all - How long will it take?
« on: 12 Feb 2011, 08:00 pm »
The idea is to listen to all of my music in my library.

Sure my main system is still in bit of flux (final DAC is still a TBD) but it's just the means to the end.

In the past couple of years I've been steadily adding to my music collection, and of course listening to the new acquisitions. So I've begun a process to listen to all the music that has been just sitting on my hard drives that needs some spin time. Therefore, I've created a Smart Playlist in iTunes that has a simple parameter of "Plays: is less than 1", limited to Media type: Music. Currently, it shows 790 albums. That's quite a bit of music to get through. Having changed computers recently, the playcount was reset, so these 790 are unplayed as of the date of computer switch. My library shows a total of about 925 albums, depending on where you look.

Sure I am going to dig up stuff that I only listened to in college and forgot about, a few novelty songs, a few one-hit wonders, but I am sure I will be reunited with some forgotten favorites and few "new" gems.

How long will it take? I guess about 1 year. This process won't be the priority in my listening. This will be called upon mostly when I am cooking, eating, working or puttering around the house I will click on this particular Smart Playlist.

Well, you're already off to a good start by selecting Rilo Kiley.  :D

I've thought about this off an on over the years.  My collection is at roughly 1,000 discs (CD, DVD-A & SACD), with no downloads and limited LPs (w/no 'table atm).  Currently none of the DVD-A/SACD stuff is ripped...I only recently learned that the former could be and I don't know about the latter.  All in all, if I were to listen to three per day, and didn't buy much more in the mean time, I could listen to them all in a year.

And my collection is pretty small compared to some.  It would be hard in practical terms to listen to everything in my collection...I dunno how you'd get thru 25,000 LPs! :o

I have a 1tb hard drive with about 8gb free space and it is full of flac/mp3. I am pretty sure if I played it non-stop it would run for months.

I don't even listen to it any more though. I have a CDP and Rega TT that gets all my attention these days. Physical media is just that much more satisfying.  :green:

I've got 45.6 days of songs in iTunes (a little more on my home system), and have been whittling away at my "no play yet" smart playlist for about two years.  Now it totals in at about 2.5 days.  I also use another smart playlist that only plays songs that have not been played in more than 1 year.  That keeps it fresh and it's not dominated by the brand new stuff (which I listen to in my truck)...

Love those smart playlists, I wish Squeezeserver made it that easy.
Cheers

good job funkmonkey chipping your way through your collection! Almost there!

I have just a little less music than you, but of the available 3-4 hours of free time to listen to music (won't be daily for me) my 29 hours remaining in my Smart playlist may take a year, maybe more maybe less?

yeah you folks with tens of thousands of albums in your collection have quite a challenge. but not everyone has the desire to listen to it all. But since my collection is conquerable, this is what I am up to.

I have 6,000 LPs and 2,500 Cds.
To make it easy one Lp is one hour (I count operas as one so it helps for the 36 min LPs
And a lot of CDs are over 60 min.
So 8,500 hours divided by 24 hours 354 days straight
If it is eight hours of listening a day, then it is 3 years of listening.
With no repeats.
Since i listen about ten hours a day. it should be a piece of cake to listen to everything once.

Nice collection!   :thumb:

Pretty sweet that you have the ability to listen 10 hours a day...most weeks I am happy if I get that amount of time in front of my system.

At my current listening pace, it would take forever to get through my 6500+ cd's.   :(

To be honest, my music tastes have changed over time and I don't want to listen to everything that is in my collection.

Thanks for the idea, I now have my 'my unlistened' list and will play that in random while at work.

Wow! :o  I truly envy you, Elizabeth.  I think there are cobwebs growing over my system. :?  Between work & school it seems I never get a chance to crank a tune anymore. :duh:

This has turned out great!  With my 'unlistened' playlist, I am hearing some really cool stuff that I always had, but never heard.

I wish i could have enough time to listen to my whole music collection (500 gb) i'm sure if i start listening to it 24/7 it would take me weeks...probably more.
