SP2 glitches
« on: 8 Feb 2011, 03:14 am »
I have been having problems with my SP2 pro. on and off for a while now. I recently installed new firmware received from Mike at Bryston (May 2, 2008, version) everything installed properly and thought that would fix things, but I'm still having the same problems of the unit shutting down then restarting again with the volume going all the way up or the volume staying down with the volume motor staying on.
I never seem to have the problem in 2 ch bypass just when I switch to a digital input.
The only thing I have added to my system recently is a 46" plasma with digital out into the pre-amp.
(replaced a 27" CRT with analog out), and it still happens with the TV off.
Any suggestions or do I have to get the box down from the attic.

Hello MacAngus!

Funny(?) I just had the same problem on my SP2 a few weeks ago.
It's probably the same problem, the transformer for the digital side needs to be replaced (Bryston has changed to a more powerful version).

Best regards

Hi, Bjorn
That's what I figured, something to do with the digital power supply.
I'm at the point now where I think it needs to be sent in for service. I'm tired of sitting on the edge of my seat ready to jump up and turn down the volume and power it down every time I switch to a digital input.

Once in a while my SP2 will crank its volume up full. The motor just pegs the volume control clockwise and even if I try and turn it back down, the motor is fighting back, so I just turn off the power switch. Power back on and it's fine.

The problem only happens maybe once every three months or so. Nothing they could find on a bench, so I live with it.

I think the most annoying fault (and lots of others have this fault because there's a thread on it), is the IR receiver stops accepting commands from the remote. I have to toggle the power off and on at the unit itself to reset it. That fault happens at least three times a week.

Brucek,
Mine was the same just once in awhile, but now it's seems like every other time I switch to a digital input with the remote or on the unit it shuts down and then comes back on, it did six times in a row before I stopped it by turning it off from the rear switch.
I'm sure their must be a fix for it. Did they replace the digital power transformer when in for service?

No sorry, I wasn't clear when I said, "Nothing they could find on a bench, so I live with it". I have never sent it in, I just know that a fault that only reveals itself once in a blue moon will never be found by a tech. So, I live with it along with the remote IR fault.

If your fault is repeatable on any consistent basis, then I would send it in for repair.

Ok, thanks Brucek
I don't know if I can get it to repeat on a consistent basis. I think it might be a combination of the digital transformer being to small or too sensitive and minor voltage changes on the power line.
Looking at power conditioners but I do have it plugged into a MIT power stabilizer and it has been from day one. I guess I should just send it in while it's still under warranty.

James,

Can you please tell us from which serie# you changed the digital transformer, or does all have the "small one"?

James,
How do I go about sending in my SP2 for warranty service?
I would normally take it back to the store I bought it from but, the dealer no longer carries Bryston.
It keeps shutting off every day now when using a digital input. I'm ready to throw the remote at it!!
e-mailed Mike and service dept early in the week but have not heard anything back?
Thanks

James,

Is Mike Pickett on holidays? I have been contacting him with no response.
He has been helping me with my ongoing SP2 issues.
I haven't heard back from him for quite a while now.
