Wow! I was just about to post about this!  Ireland has produced some great musicians and guitarists over the years, but I don't know if any were as talented as Gary Moore.  He was an amazing guitar player and one of my favorites.  His style was totally unique and his tone was masterful.

It's very sad news...RIP.

Here is one of my favorite GM performances (on youtube).  Gary is the wild looking dude on the left shouting into the mike, playing smoking blues guitar.  He was one of a kind and I can listen to his playing all day long and never tire.

I was gravitating towards the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the late Seventies so I got introduced to Gary Moore's guitar playing and his music ( these two terms can be mutually exclusive but not in his case)early - back when he was in Colosseum and went on to give Thin Lizzy a good swift kick. Loved his sound and his style. I still remember fondly reading an interview with him from back in the day where the writer made the mistake of comparing Moore's playing to that of Jimmy Page. Moore EXPLODED! Told the interviewer that he took that as an insult because he had worked long and hard to get to where he was as a player and that he considered Page to be one of the sloppiest players around. Page was a giant of composition but he sure hit his share of honkers playing live. Many have been preserved for posterity for us all to wince at forever.

I was truly shocked to stumble upon the news!  He wasn't a hard partying rocker, but supposedly lead a healthy lifestyle.  It's tragic to see him die at such a young age.  I've always loved his music.  Growing up Run For Cover was one of my favorite albums, and lead me to buy many of his discs.  What sad, sad news.

R.I.P. Gary Moore

Shocking news indeed. I have 9 of his albums, all solid rocker's. You just never know when you're time is up. It's moments like this that make me appreciate life just a little bit more. My condolences go out to his loved ones.

Cheers,
Robin

Loved his work in fusion and metal. I used to crank the track "White Knuckles" off his G-Force album for Val Halen fans. Eddie who??

The tracks he cut on Cozy Powell's solo albums were also "Killer" (pun intended). "The Blister", "Sunset"

His work with Colosseum II, especially "Electric Savage" and "War Dance" albums, was great. "The Scorch", "The Inquisition", "Fighting Talk".

His metal phase of the 80's was fantastic. "Corridors of Power" and "Victims of the Future" are classics. Some great covers of "Shapes of Things" and "Wishing Well".

The EP "Gary Moore and Friends" was one that I really cranked up. "Nuclear Attack" (smoked the version on Greg Lake's solo album), a great cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Run To Your Mama"....

"The Flight of the Snow Moose", "What Would You Rather Bee or a Wasp".

What a player! I wish that he had taken better care of himself.

Get the "Live at the Monsters of Rock" DVD. No choppy editing or special effects, just a good old fashioned concert video of Gary shredding.

Update :

"Legendary guitarist Gary Moore passed away in the early morning hours this past Sunday while on vacation in Spain. On Monday officials revealed that initial post-mortem findings indicated Moore probably died of a heart attack.

The 58-year-old former Thin Lizzy guitarist was staying at the Kempinski Resort Hotel on the Costa del Sol with his girlfriend. Sources there say the pair had eaten sandwiches and burgers and drank champagne and brandy Saturday evening, and that there was nothing out of the ordinary about their demeanor. Moore's girlfriend called for paramedics around 4 AM Sunday after finding the guitarist unresponsive.

“His death is not in any way suspicious," a police spokesman said Monday. "An inquiry has been opened to find the exact cause.” According to that inquiry, forensics experts have ordered further tissue samples to determine the exact cause of death.

Moore's brother Cliff and other relatives are in the Costa del Sol today, making preparations to fly his body home."

I have to admit, I was more aware of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson's guitar work with Thin Lizzy. Wasn't Gary Moore only with them for like a year?

R.I.P. to him in any event.  :(

I believe he was actually in the band twice, the second time being for "Black Rose" and the subsequent tour. I think pretty much every guitarist other than Charlie Christian and Andre Segovia did a stint ( or a hit ) with Lizzy.
