Eric Clapton w/ Duane Allman were a pretty good match up.
I found this one of EC earlier today - he's still really good.

Eric Clapton's Crossroads DVDs are worth getting as well.

While speaking with my wife tonight about this subject / post, she is right in the aspect that if you are new to blues you need to not get do deep into the old masters for chance of being scared away. In other words take your time and start off with more recent artists. She did say that to get a good start would be with Texas Flood and go from there. How true she is.

I only saw a brief mention of B.B. King...no blues collection is complete with BB.

A few of my favs and all these are good recordings

Muddy Waters- Woodstock Collection
Eric C and BB King- Rding with the King
Bonnie Rait-Luck of the Draw
Keb Mo- Suitcase..all of KM's cd's are good recordings
John Hooker- Chillout
Robert Cray- Live across the pond
Lightning Hopkins- Sings the Blues
Little Charlie and the Nightcats-Night Vision
Buddy Guy - Sweet Tea...mentioned earlier..great recording
BB King-Blues Summitt

You can't go wrong with any of these.

A good starting point for classic blues:
B.B. King Live at the Regal.  B.B. King is at the top of his game on this.  The first time I heard this I was so mesmerized by his singing that when I heard his first guitar solo I thought, "Oh yeah, I did buy this for the guitar work."
Howlin' Wolf the "Rocking Chair" Album.  The roots of Rock and Roll.  After hearing this it is easy to understand the progression of the Blues to Chuck Berry's sound and style.

A few more to check out - the original Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Aynsley Dunbar (& The Retaliation), Siegel-Schwall Band.

Not the classics like Lightning, John Lee, or Muddy, but solid works none the less.

Muddy waters - Folk Singer. Recording quality is amazing and the album kicks butt.  Buddy Guy on guitar and Willie Dixon on bass. Very cool.

the problem with starting a blues collection (like classical) is that there's just SO MUCH "must have" material that you probably want to start with compilations. time/life put out a classic series (you could even order it on tv at the time) called "living the blues". there's a bunch of them, laid out mostly by decades. get em used on amazon or your fave online source.

Now before blues purists start freaking out about including this band under the "blues" category, I am fully aware Blues Traveler is usually considered "pop" or "rock."

Since you are just starting out and you're used to "pop" or "rock" I might recommend starting with an Albert Collins classic - Cold Snap.  He leans a bit more to the mainstream than traditionalist bluesmen but would be good to start with.  Then I would send you to John Lee Hooker, Albert King, and Jimmy Reed.  The best sounding version IMHO is the out-of-print MFSL version (you can find it on e-bay or on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Snap-Albert-Collins/dp/B000000IU5/ref=tmm_acd_title_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298055445&sr=8-2).

Hope this helps.

WOW!!

This thread has truly got a lot of information for me to digest here.

I was over at Best Buy today. First I would like to say that it was truly heartbreaking. They cut there music section in half.

However, I did pick up a couple of CDs.

I got Joe Bonamassa "Blues Deluxe" and Buddy Guy "Living Proof." I'll dive into these and see how I like em.

They also had blue notes Coltrane's Blue Train for 5 dollars, so I picked that up to maybe catch some jazz fever as well.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, and keep em coming!

I buy all my CDs off of Amazon. Most of the time I go for used titles. Much less expensive than retail.
