Recommend me some blues...
« on: 6 Feb 2011, 03:33 pm »
So, I am trying to build my music collection as much as possible.

You could say that my music collection is quite eclectic. I listen to pretty much anything in any genre of music, I really just love music.

Recently I have been playing all of my old Blues Traveler albums.

Now before blues purists start freaking out about including this band under the "blues" category, I am fully aware Blues Traveler is usually considered "pop" or "rock."

However, it still has peaked my interest in what other variations this genre has to offer me.

So, I am open to any and all recommendations in any variant of blues.

Enlighten me...  :thumb:

I have a pretty varied collection, some of which is the blues, and variants of the blues.

My friends make fun of me, because although I don't have much country, I have a fair number of blues country recordings.

I will leave the purists to enjoy what they do, I like bits and pieces of it all!

Keb Mo
Robert Cray
John Lee Hooker
Terry Garland
Robert Johnson

I'd add:

Roy Buchanon
Jeff Beck has a few really good ones
Mose Allison (piano)
North Mississippi All Stars
Janis Joplin did a few bluesy numbers as well.

There are many different genres of blues.
Personally I really like a lot of performers from Stevie Ray Vaughn and Buddy Guy to Marsha Ball and Bonnie Rait. There are some great Harmonica players such as Charlie Musselwhite and Rod Piazza or good Texas blues from Canned Heat or swing of Duke Rubalard or Junior Brown. Alvin Youngblood Hart and Taj Mahall put out an eclectic type of blues that's really enjoyable. Then there is a genre attached to the blues in the form of zydeco that is contagious.
It is a lot of fun trying out the different groups and individuals and I wish you happy trails in your search. You might see if there is a local blues organization that you can find a lot of things happening around you that you aren't even aware of.

Later
Don

I think the Blues Masters Series from Rhino was a good well thought out collection.  You can start with volumes that have styles or instruments that interest you the most and use it as a starting point to discover artists.

...agreed...great list...though truth be known I think a bit heavy on the Johnny Winter...a few of those could be replaced with something from the Lightning Hopkins, Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo catalogs...btw a great oft-overlooked album in this genre is Making Music by Clarence Gatemouth Brown and Roy Clark ( yes that Roy Clark...and can that boy play!!!)...

Cheers

Really nobody does blues as well as Johnny Lee Hooker. ( I am sure I will get some arguments here)

But try these selections...

I Cover the Waterfront (duet with Van Morrison)
My Dream
No Substitute
Spellbound
Six Page Letter

I never listened to blues at all and my friend gave me the Album "The Healer" by JLH
WOW! I was Hooked by Johnny Lee
I have been trying to find another Blues artist that can sing like him, but have not yet.
JLH got me to listen to entire GENRE of music that I had not previously enjoyed.

Buddy GuySweet Tea is a great raw electric blues album, and fairly current.  Another good place to start is with Howlin Wolf's The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions where the Wolf uses Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Steve Winwood for his band.  So much good stuff out there from Hound Dog Taylor to Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Lightin' Hopkins to John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee to Bo Diddly...  That's just a few that I really like, the list is very long.  Willy Dixon I Am The Blues plays like a 60's-70's blues based rock and roll song book...  Heavily borrowed from by the likes of Led Zeppelin and the Doors.  But if you really want to get into it, start with Robert Johnson, he's the one who reputedly went down to the crossroads and sold his soul to the Devil.

Cheers and enjoy.
