Cabinet cavity with 46" plasma TV
« on: 4 Feb 2011, 12:40 pm »
As you can see from the pictures I have a cabinet between my speakers, though the speaker baffles are out in front by several inches. In the middle of it is a large cavity (50"w x 49"h x 24"d) housing a new tv (46" plasma). Had to remove the doors to fit the tv so no longer able to hide the cavity and tv while listening to 2 channel audio (without video of course).

Should I treat only the tv (perhaps heavy blanket) or do I need to treat/cover the entire cavity?
And if I need to treat the cavity, must the treatment fit tightly?
Panels? Diffusors? Heavy blanet?
Any suggestions? I sit about 12 feet away from the speakers.

Hello rockadanny,

Have you heard any difference between doors on and doors off?  It is very unlikely that there would be discrete & early reflections from this change.  Also, any resonance is highly unlikely to be perceived as there are a lot of items/nooks/furnishings in the existing space.

If you are hearing a change it would be good to know if it seems more brash or more muddy.  This would help target either an absorber in front of display or absorption in cavity.

Jeffrey,

As per an off-line suggestion (thank you Bryan), I covered the TV with a heavy blanket and all seems OK with just that. Perhaps my fears were unfounded. More sessions are required for further evaluation, but for now I am happy. Thank you.
