Who is trying the 6P3S-E
« on: 1 Feb 2011, 02:03 am »
I got a couple quads coming from Jim McShane. I think they are a sub for the EL-34. Just wanted to hear what people think of them.

They sound great in my Van Alstine Ultimate 70s. Some say that they sound better than Gold Lion KT-66 tubes. I don't have any KT-66s to compare. Maybe Jim McShane can comment.

I have them, purchased from Jim, and I really like them.  They are not a direct sub for the EL-34, closer to the 6l6 family, so you should bias them a little differently.  For that family of tubes, I don't think there's a better overall value out there than the quads Jim is selling.

I love them in my Onix/Melody SP-3 subbing for a 5881/6L6GC.

I wonder if they would work in the VTL MB-125 monoblocks? :|

I really would like to try them in my VTL MB-125 monoblocks. I do not know enough about plate voltage and the other stuff needed figure out if it would be a problem.
I did ask VTL and they said run el-34's. I then asked about the Gold Lion KT-77 and was told to run EL-34's. I had the feeling that they wanted me to run EL-34's  :nono:
But I am like many of you, and like to try other tubes. I have heard wonderful things about the 6p3s-e tubes. I even listened to them on my uncles Dynaco.
Will these work in my amps?  Will these hurt my amps?  Help if you can please.
Thanks :)

I like the 6P3S-E in my melody SP3 better than the Tung Sols that I have too.

I believe the data sheets show them almost exactly the same, only difference is a few pins not connected internally, so if your amp relies on those to be connected in the tube it might not work.

they are a rugged Russian Military Version of a 5881 and Jim McShane does a great job of matching and burning these tubes in. they are my favorite tube to run single ended parallel in my Loc Vu modded GTA SE40. they are a absolute steal for the little bit of money that Jim charges for a Quad  :thumb:

Blair Lamphere or some other competent person can modify the MB-125's to run 6L6/5881/KT66. I have a pair of MB-100's that i am going to send to Blair so he can modify it to run 6L6/5881/KT66 and replace the stock bias pots with ten turn pots. i prefer this family of tubes over EL34's any day of the week  :thumb:

I tried them in my Onix SP3 replacing the stock chinese 5881s. They made a nice improvement, richer, bolder, and bigger sounding overall.
