We'll think of you the next time a hurricane sweeps through N.C., or the Tar Heels get their asses kicked!   :icon_twisted:

Hurricanes - no

Tar Heels - yes

I wish I could be wrong as often as the weather forecasters, make the money they do, and keep my job.  :duh:
Ain't that the truth.

Just in case somebody does lose power for a significant period of time, remember this: if you still have water pressure, the temperature of the water coming into your house should be about 50-55 degrees.  Just open all your cold water taps just enough for a steady stream and that should keep your cold water lines from freezing.  If your water heater is natural gas or propane, and does NOT have electronic controls, if you have water pressure, you have hot water. Again, open all your hot water taps just enough for a steady stream and that should keep your hot water lines from freezing.

Best of luck,

Ken

100 miles down I-44 we have about an inch of sleet, but driving isn't too bad because it hasn't turned to solid ice.  How are things in STL?

I live in St Peters and we have a base of ice and its dropping some freezing rain at the moment. Last weather report say to expect 10" in Metro St Louis with deeper snow to the North and West. There could also be some thunder snow leading to very heavy accumulations in some areas. I had just left for work when I got a call announcing my first ever snow day. For those of you with 4 wheel drive and looking for an audio fix don't head to The Sound Room as we are all at home.

I am looking out the window right now here in the city. It ain't pretty. I think the title of this thread says it quite well.  Maybe I will break down the system and clean all the connectors. I can pass a few hours that way. Even better I think I will play some music, drink some Scotch, and smoke a cigar.

Hope you guys make out OK.  This storm is about to hit Toronto, so I think I am in for what you are seeing now, overnight and into mid day tomorrow!

I wish you the best MCG. They just updated the snow fall in Peoria Ill to 16 to 22 inches and they said 24 inches is quite possible, breaking the all time record of 18" in a 24 hour period, back in the year 1900.

On top of that I have been feeding some cats (about a mile away) and they live in 2 vents in the concrete floor (building torn down). I am afraid that they will perish for lack of oxygen. Will attempt to reach them, but will be quite difficult since so much snow and drifts will occur as winds expected to reach gusts of 45 miles per hour.  :(

Please be careful with pets.

Thankfully I think we dodged the bullet on the freezing rain last night. We only got about a 1/4" (at least where I'm at). Sleet on the other hand is almost an inch think and we're all still in the 12"+ snow band. The changeover is just starting now.

The snow is just a pain in the butt but from watching the news, the sleet looks like it isn't coming off the streets and they've been working on it for about 12 hours now. That should make driving interesting (if you decide to go out).

I guess we're stuck at home for the next day or two. Oh well, at least we don't have an inch of ice buildup on the trees and power lines  :thumb:

We're at 2+ inches of sleet, and all they can do is put sand on the hills.  Driving is not bas so long as you get a running start before hills.  And have nerves of steel.  It has changed to snow and back again 3X in Rolla

Holy crap!   Schnucks just closed the panic isles!  :o
[for those of you not from St Louis, Schnucks is one of our largest grocery stores]

I can't remember that last time that happened....if ever  They say that they are going to reopen tomorrow at 8:00 depending on what the roads look like.

I'm with Sturgus, time to go for a tumbler of scotch

Sounds like Chicago is gonna it worse than the central part of StL.  I'm 15 minutes outside of StL, and aside from the 3" of ice pellets its not too bad.  3-5" of snow expected tonight.

The part i'm loving about all this is the US finally gets to watch a Chicago blizzard, and the media (TWC) is doing their best to provide that 'you are there' feeling.

I lived 200' in the air, right on lakeshore drive, for 6 yrs.  An amazing perch to watch storms like this roll through.

2in of sleet in ballwin, and a dusting of snow as of 9pm.  Looks like we got lucky with all the precip being sleet instead of freezing rain.

Good to see you all in St. Louis are doing well.  I am just north of Chicago and I live on the lake.  It is brutal here!!  Lot's of blowing snow, but it is very light and easy to shovel.  Apparently we are due for another 1' of snow tonight, this means no work for me tomorrow!!  I will be spending the day shoveling however. If I had a surfboard and it was 50 degrees warmer I would try to catch some waves on the lake (ha-ha).

Well in Des Peres/Kirkwood area of St. L. if you go out with just a shovel, you can only move the top.
First you have to get out the scrapper
http://www.tractorsupply.com/lawn-garden/lawn-tools-garden-tools/other-garden-yard-tools/groundwork-reg-7-in-heavy-duty-scraper-4413823
break it up and then shovel it.
Of course I live on steep hill with lots of exposure on the southwest side, so perhaps places that are more protected won't be as icy.
At least my wife won't complain about me not doing my exercises today.

I've been down by Brownsville, TX for a couple of days and managed to make it back to Dallas last night. Not the worst roads I ever drove on but pretty close.  No prob until 40 miles outside Dallas and then it was just nuts.  8.5 hours to go 480 miles, 3.5 hours to go the last 40 miles.  All this in a pickup pulling a trailer  :duh:

Think I'm going to hole up here a couple of nights and wait for things to clear.    I'm in a nice hotel out by DFW with a nice restaurant/bar and a Bass Pro Shops attached without going outside.  Beats the heck out of sliding around, avoiding stupid drivers, and eating at McDonalds!

C ya in a few days hopefully.

As of 8:30am here in Toronto I think we have 6-8 inches of snow, hard to tell with the blowing around.  It is expected to last another 4-6 hours, and we should see another 6-8 inches.

I have not cleared the driveway yet, but the plow has come by once, so I will head out in around 30-45 minutes.  Kids are home from school, office is closed, and the system is running nicely in the basement.  I will get lots of frames of billiards in today!
