I have come across many turntables with cracked dust covers.
Glue seems to "stand out" & look bad. Is there a best (or better) way to repair them?
Anyone recommend a miracle polish, cream, or paste that will remove, cover, hide, the scuffs on a cover?

Hi Mark,
Can't help you out with the cracked and repaired question, careful use of super glue worked best for me but still highly visible.
Re. Scuffs - I use standard auto polish, being very careful to buff away all of the residue afterwards.
Worked very well on a couple of older decks I had.

This cone thingy worked for me. It's from my FLAPS (friendly local automotive parts store, audio is just one of my passions~!). Put it on your drill and make sure your area (and you) are will protected from splatter. I used a two speed Makita on the slow speed. And be REALLY careful when you get near edges and corners or you can send the dustcover flying (don't ask me how I could know such a thing...). Also, store it carefully because if a speck of anything gets onto it, you can deeply scratch the dustcover. Vary your angles of spin and you won't leave longitudinal marks.

Cracked dust covers are a bummer. My Sony PS-X7's cover is cracked. I've glued it up so it is structural, and then covered it up with some black vinyl (it was towards the back on top) so it looks kind of OK. New ones can be had on eBay, but they can get spendy.

I don't think it's possible to repair a crack so it's not obvious. Maybe a windshield repair kit would do it, I don't know.

Businesses that repair/replace windows can help you.  If they work with plexiglass, there is a clear solution that works by capillary action.  When building a plexiglass box you butt the two edges together at 90 degrees, then apply the fluid to the interior corner like caulk.  It will find its way into the gap and set up fairly quickly.  I don't recall its name, but it might be worth a shot. Maybe try it on your ex's dust cover first.

As many have said it already, cracked dust cover can not be repaired and make the crack invisible. I have a cracked dust cover, I glued it back and just have to put up with the crack. The other one, I managed to find a good dust cover close to it's size, drilled new holes in the back so the hinges would fit, and it works just fine.

You want to open the dust cover or take it completely off while listening anyway, so don't worry about it as long as the crack doesn't get worse.

I collect vinyl records & try to hit every garage/yard sale anywhere near my house on Saturday mornings. Most people that have records usually have old stereo equipment that went with them. (cheap). With that being said, I have extra turntables, receivers, speakers that I'll clean up & resell to refuel my vinyl addiction.
I like the auto polish & black vinyl suggestions. (cheap).
$100 on a new cover for a $30-$40 turntable is a stretch. Might go there for a marantz 6300 I picked up last week that's missing a cover. (anybody out there got one)???
