Buying vinyl on Discogs
« on: 28 Jan 2011, 05:01 pm »
Hi all,
Just received my 2nd purchase via Discogs and got to say I've been very impressed with the service in both, differing, cases.
First was a singular purchase of a relatively rare Hendrix album which in my opinion was in better condition than described.
Today I received a pack of 4 albums. 3 were perfect, one was a duffer, but after a quick mail exchange the vendor gave an instant refund for the offending disc.

Anyone else here been using Discogs to buy?
Would be interested to hear others experiences.

Cheers
Dave

I've used Discogs and Music Stack several times with great results.Buying used records unseen is always a crapshoot though.I consider myself lucky with only 2 bad records out of over 50-60 that I've bought thru these services.

Thanks Decal,

A few strikes on this post, so it looks like there's not many Discogs buyers here.

My primary source for vinyl to date has been local Record Fairs, but they don't always have what I want at sensible money.
I've also had the odd Ebay aquisition.
Discogs is likely to become my primary source for specific discs based on my experiences so far.
The two vendors I've dealt with appear to be a little more protective of their 100% rating than the Ebay sellers I've bought from.
Some flew so "Close to the edge" that they fell off.

Cheers
Dave

I had never heard of Discogs before this thread. Can you provide a link to it?

Spot on Paul,

http://www.discogs.com

It's a little clunky but I'm getting there with it.

Laura - I know you're Heart fan.
Two of the discs I bought off the latest Discogs vendor were near mint versions of;
Dog and Butterfly
Passionworks

Cheers

Thanks Paul & Davey,

I cruised the site a bit and it looks interesting. I like the way you can filter your search, especially by the condition of the record.

I'm afraid my luck buying used LPs thru the mail has been awful, ebay
(smashbay) was by far the worst so I no longer buy used LPs
in this way..........Bill

So far my eBay experience has been very good. I have received a few that didn't meet the advertised condition and have always received full refund. My favorite place to buy used is records is Records by Mail http://www.recordsbymail.com/ Craig is very accurate in his grading.

The grading definitions on Discogs are pretty stringent and so far it looks like the vendors, especially those with a good history at 99%+ tend to slightly under call the condition to maintain the seller rating.

I think the problem with ebay is that their sellers don't all conform to a standardised grading system (I know they should).
Mint, Near Mint, Excellent are used too frequently.
I've had VG+ on Discogs at better condition than some identified as mint on the Bay.

One good tip when searching for vinyl on Discogs

In the drop down menus you can only select the generic search field "vinyl".
To then target a specific format, type in the description e.g. "LP Album" into the blank "Search" field.

This is great if you find a specific album you're after, then want to see what other albums the vendor has for sale. Saves you needing to leaf through a load of singles if you only want albums etc.
Typically P&P for extra items is a fraction of the first, so it's worthwhile checking the rest of the vendor stock to see what else might tickle the fancy. :)
This is another key feature over ebay for me.
No Auctions - See what you want, add to your Trolley then Checkout and Pay.

The Want List Feature works pretty well too. I've got a few in there, no rush!
Wait for notification of one to come on at a price and condition I'm prepared to pay then off you go.

The above two approaches were applied to my last purchase.
I was after a new copy of Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous", one came up described as VG+ for 2 GBP (approx 3 USD).
I trawled the vendors other albums and added three more and hit the button.

I like it  :)

Now uploading an album that's not on the register, that's a different story!

The last record I bought on Ebay was Cream's Disreali Gears on the Plum & gold Atco
label. 1st it didn't arrive and the sellar was belligerent, then when it arived 3 months later
(Thank You USPS) it was broken. Putting that aside the record was hammered. Condition was
not as stated and had it not been broken I would have never played it. I found one a my loacal
record shop later for, if I remember correctly $12.00. It seems I can find most LPs that I need
if I'm patient enough................Bill

I started using Discogs about 2 years ago and I’ve always had good service.  :thumb:
