Need Opininion on Platforms for RM2
« on: 19 Mar 2004, 08:10 pm »
I tilt my RM2's up about 3/4 inch which greatly improves the mid and high response at my listening position. The tradeoff is less bass than when the speakers are flat against the floor (in the basement with indoor/outdoor carpet over cement). I removed some extra putty and it helped a little but it isn't as good as when the speakers are flat.
I recently received a Mapletree Audio catalog which shows a pair of 2" thick wood platforms which they call  "Maple Bedrock". They're big enough to fit under the entire speaker and tilited upward on brass points. The front point is adjustable.
It seems like this might solve both my problems. I would still have the upward tilt and with the speakers coupled to the platforms the bass should improve. I'm just worried that with speakers resting on hard wood instead of carpet that the bass might be too strong. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

hmen,
It should be fine. I had my RM2s on a burbur (sp?) carpeted-over cement floor basement. I used casettes and VCRs tapes at first to tilt the speaker back. Loved the improvement. Then I saw the Mapleshade thing and thought I could do something similar...so I went and bought a thick Maple cutting board ($20). Put that on the floor and tilted the speaker back using a couple of tiptoes underneath the front of the RM2. Worked great.

FWIW, I posted this about it a while ago on Harmonic Discord:

Sharper,
Thanks. I like the cutting board idea. I think you just saved me about $300. :notworthy:

dont forget the wood guy thats here-(check market square)
he might be able to do a custom with pitch, so you dont need anything to lift them on the front -solid contact with floor also-

thats what i would do-

In a recent issue of Bound for Sound (last I think?) MGD gave a very favorable (and tongue-in-cheek) review to the all wood TV-tray stands he picked up for $20 at Target (stands removed)...

These were used as amp stands though, so I'm sure they'd be just horrible as speaker tilters

rosconey,
I think you hit the nail on the head. The best solution is the simplest solution and your idea of a slanted wood board is perfect (is it pretentious to say "elegant in it's simplicity"?). Chris at  timbernation offered to do an 18"x15"x2" maple platform slanted down 5/8" to the other end for $100. At $200 a pair with shipping included I'm paying less than half what  I originally was going to pay and it will probably work out better. When it arrives I'll post my impressions.
                 Thanks for the idea.

whoa-my name is howard also :o
great names think alike

glad it worked out :D

you might want to add dowels sticking up from the maple base that match up with holes on  the bottom of your speakers base-to keep them from slipping off :P

just more free info

I never thought Howard was such a great name. Did you ever notice that on TV, especially sitcoms, charactors named Howard are always weird?

I think Chris is going to hook you up.  I think you'll really like this solution as it sounds.  Great idea and he might just open up RM2 to others who weren't interested because of the height.

The platforms arrived last week. The bass response improved, although not as dramatically as I had hoped. The bass is definitely tighter and slightly more powerful. I might remove a little more putty. The biggest improvement is the added "air" between the instruments. I was also very impressed by the improved transient response.  This is most notable on percussion instruments. Drums not only sound more realistic but I can really feel their prescence in a way I couldn't before. The platforms improved the over all performance of the system much more than I expected and I fully recommend them to other RM2 owners.
