Looking for local acoustics expert
« on: 26 Jan 2011, 06:09 pm »
I have been dealing with a horrible room for years. It's a converted garage that was to be my dream music and  home theater room. I've been through more speakers and gear over the last couple of years it makes me sick to think about how much money I have burned up. I ended up selling all my expensive gear because I just could not get anything to sound good in there.

I have played with bass traps, reflection points, speaker locations, etc for years now. I believe I have 13 GIK traps and panels in the room now and to my ears, they have done nothing to improve the sound.

I am now searching for someone local to the Seattle, WA area that has a good knowledge of room acoustics. I would love to have my room measured (Room EQ Wizard or??) and then come up with a plan on how to fix it. I am of course willing to pay for this service.

All I want is to be able to go in and relax and enjoy my system, but for the last 5 years or so, it has just been the source of constant frustration.

If you are local and think you can help, please send me a PM.

I would send Bryan Pape of GIK an email and see if he has any interest in getting on a plane...

Well, I'll be glad to help however I can. I know you've had some frustration with the previous speakers you had.  I don't know the distribution of the products that you have nor do I remember the room exactly but if you'd care to post the information, I'll be happy to do what I can.

MCA,
Although my guy is not local to you, he wasn't local to me either.  Jeff Hedback, Hedback Design, is an incredible acoustics expert that transformed by pretty good room to state of the art (IMHO  :)  ) via remote analysis and some communication.  Jeff never visited the house, did all his work via modeling and asking good questions, and ended up designing some amazing treatment ideas that I had a local craftsman build to spec.  The value was through the roof (pun somewhat intended if you see the pics).  My latest pics are on the "show us your room" thread

Jeff also did a remote project for Art Smuck's room (different problems, different solutions).  Art loves it.

Hi MCA,

Just so that you know, I worked with Bryan remotely on my room and have been very pleased with the results.  With a little knowledge and some pictures you can get quite a bit of expertise remotely.

Good luck with the room.

Hi MCA,

Let me know if you get some help since I'm in your area and might want to do the same.  I've purchased from you some of the speakers you tried (Omega Max Hemp 4/08 and Emerald Physics 7/08).

I can't believe all that room treatment has done nothing to improve the sound at all, even in a bad room.  I assume you were at least smart enough to ask GIK to help you figure out the right way to treat the room, and you didn't wing it yourself.  If my assumption is right, I'm stunned that you got zero improvement.  Does not compute, even in that square room you have.

Anyway, I'd open up the Seattle area yellow pages and see what you can find, phone a few of them up and talk with them.  Also try googling Seattle acoustic consultants etc.

With all the money you've spent, and the investment you've put in to room treatment already, its good to see you're not giving up.

One suggestion... make sure you get the right kind of speakers for that room.  Speaker integration in to the room is critical and comes before speaker placement and room treatment in my book.

And, have you considered a reno of the garage/room to make it more rectangular?  That might be the best thing you can possibly put your money towards.  And don't sell those GIK products either.

If you're still looking for an acoustical expert, you can try www.kineticsnoise.com.  They have link on their page with an acoustic consultant directory by state.
