WTB: Placette Passive Linestage
« on: 26 Jan 2011, 04:18 am »
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to purchase a used Placette passive preamp.  I need the newer version with 3 inputs/2 ouputs.  Has to be in very good condition.

Thanks,
Ernie

I can also do a trade for a Pass Labs X150.5 or a Modwright 9.0 signature edition preamp, both are in excellent condition.

I'm still in the market to purchase the Placette for cash or trade for Modwright preamp.  My Pass Labs amp has sold.

Thanks,
Ernie

Look up "Targa" in the members section and send him a PM.  He may not still have his tho I encouraged him to keep it.  That is one fine, high resolution piece of gear.  I think it is or was the littlest, tho.

Ern Dog, what passives have you tried, if you don't mind me asking.  I use a Goldpoint/Elma stepped attenuator with wonderful results.  It's pretty simple to wire it with multiple outputs if needed.

I pulled the trigger on an active Placette.  I have never tried a passive before, but would still be interested in the passive unit.  Then I can hear which is a better fit for my rig.

i sincerely doubt you will find anything more transparent that an ldr-based attenuator.  you really owe it to yourself to try one.  i like the eva, because it is also remote control.  and, you cannot lose much money on it if you don't like it.  hell, it's so relatively inexpensive, you could throw it away and still not lose as much money as you would, trying to resell other similar (but not similarly priced) gear.

I agree with Doug.  I auditioned a Lightspeed LDR in my modest 2 channel system awhile back.  An LDR pre is the  best way I know of to achieve a straight line from your source to your amplifier.  The LDR's are amazing, however, I have found nice synergy in my system using the Goldpoint/Elma stepped attenuator.  I have also read good things about the "Truth Preamp".  Here a link to that one.

No doubt that the active Placette preamp is awesome, too.

I looked at all or most of the LDR solutions available, including DIY. I am not much of a DIY. I opted for Warpspeed for the best circuitry and control. They all work and each have different pro-cons. I have the warpspeed running in full balanced configurations all controlled from a single precision pot. Simplicity and no issues with pot tolerances issue.

If you have long cables, like a remote, need a buffer for the input or output, the Myth looks good and is a completed product. No 110v though. I am sure you can change the transformer out.

the reason i went with the eva is cuz i also did not want to diy, i do not need balanced, i wanted the least expensive unit awailable w/remote control.  for circuitry quality, i am more than satisfied w/the diyparadise solution - when i queried its designer, this is the response i got:

"Eva2 is design with 2 LDRs per channel; configured in variable series and shunt. This yield the best sonic result compared to fixed series resistor and variable shunt design."

there is no channel imbalance issue, and no operational problems so far, in ~9 months of use.  the unit is pretty-much on 24/7.

sorry about getting so off-topic.  but, anyone interested in something like the placette, (i was also interested), should consider ldr-based pre's as well...

The EVA-2 also has cute display and uses Arduino to control the volume instead of the pot.

Paul Haynes has a decent design also with a remote. He will build the circuit but not house it.

The Myth is the only other complete solution I know so far - at least in a decent price range. The Dartzeel runs about $26k I believe. Melos has been using the LDR for a while also.

Looks like perhaps a new passive is in the works to be mainstreamed soon - the next 10 years?

Still looking for the Placette Passive and can pay or trade Pass Labs X150.5 amp.
