Hi guys, first off let me say I'm a horn guy but have always wondered about this open baffle thingy.I recently changed drivers in my horns and now I'm left with a pair of fostex 126e lying idle.My question is this can they be used to build a pair of open baffles. They don't have to be excellent I'm just wanting to test the water before diving in.If they can,can someone please help me with some dimensions for the baffle.
ps i'll be using a 10inch sealed sub with them.

Thanks in advance derockster

With its very low Qts the 126E will start to roll off in an OB at a high frequency. Typically you want it to cross over at ~300 Hz. This would be easy with a dedicated woofer along the lines of this http://www.quarter-wave.com/OBs/OB_Design.pdf. But applying your subwoofer instead would leave a large gap in the frequency response.

Hey Rudolf thanks for your response..Here's where the newbie in me really starts .Are you saying the 126e would work but it's best if use with a dedicated woofer instead of my sub,and do I incorporate it into the same baffle?

I would say that is what he is suggesting, but I would actually suggest experimenting with the driver alone on a baffle first.

Toss it onto a 12-15 inch wide flat baffle, and give it a listen full range.  Don't goose the volume, don't want to hurt the driver by overdriving the suspension, but it will be insightful about the general sound you can expect from that driver on OB.

If you like it, start designing a more robust version including a woofer and likely biamping.

If it is not your cup of tea, then you are only out a little time and 2 boards!

Have fun,

Derockster, I blew out the vc's of a pair of fe108ez's by running full range on open baffle, had same curiosity as you and it didn't go well. Thought I was keeping the volume down, but there's a point where those little guys vc's give out. They just don't have the xmax for it. Besides on ob they won't put out any bass to hear anyway. I wouldn't do it - UNLESS you series ~ 50-100uF caps on them for protection.
But in Martins design with Alpha 15's supposed to be great, tho may need to pad down 126's.
