I'm not very good at subtlety, yet.  Don't know how to get there

You have a great eye for composition.
Do you calibrate your monitor regularly?
On my calibrated monitor these are beautiful but a bit hot.
Your colors are awesome. Makes me want to get some Fuji Velvia film out of the freezer!
best.

Nicely done! good going with the low light interior shots too!

Looks like you had lots to do in my neck of the woods (bay area). what lens did you use most with the D90?

BTW, I don't mind the vivid, contrasty shots--all photos don't need to look like Hallmark greeting cards.

Nice!  I can see you spent some time on these.  They look quite good on screen.  No haloing in all but a few shots, and even then only minimal.  There's a definite quasi-film, romantic look here.  I especially like the grassy\rocky cliff images.  Is it just me or is there some Dissolve mode stamp tool action on the pizza image?  The upper right plate edge looks a little pixely.

Hey!

ooheadsoo, you got good eyes there.

Yes, the saturation and contrast is high but it dose give these pictures some feel to it especially those beach pics of which I think work well. I wouldn't worry about it. Everybody have their own way and look when it come to making photos. Of course it is a different story if you are shooting for client of which sometime they need to be accurate.

    Nicely done here indeed. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

I appreciate the compliments.  I'm working the composition.  So far, I can only make shots with simple compositions look somewhat decent.  Anything with more than a few elements is still beyond my ken.  As for the color and all that, I would like to improve in all areas, not just high contrast super saturated shots.  I dont really know how to even go about shooting a high tone pic.

The beach pics looked quite bad before I boosted their black levels and HSL values.

Telephoto shots were primarily shot with a friend's 100mm macro, landscapes were probably shot with a sigma 10-20 or 18-50, I'd have to check.

No Photoshop, just light room.  I think the pizza noise is a result of the camera's noise reduction.

I edited these shots on an inexpensive laptop I just purchased.  I was disappointed in the screens viewing angles, so I am selling it and buying another.  I'll see how it goes.

We meant to go to the cal academy but the high price of admission turned us off, and de young was only $10.  And we chanced upon a free concert.  And free street parking.  Score.

The concert was well lit by their crew, I had nothing to do with it.

That gun sculpture(?) thing is really cool.  I also dig the complimentary colored light sources.  What is that anyway?  Got any other shots of it?

I didn't take very many shots of it given the black and oxidized copper nature of the sculpture in a dark room, but it's a statement about the church and war.  iNside the cathedral is a spine and skull, I believe.  At least a spine, don't remember if there was a skull.

Those coastal shots bring back fond memories...my wife and I honeymooned in the Mendocino area, and got back there for our 10 year anniversary.  Now we're approaching 20 years...time for another visit!

Alert: newbie questions to follow.

So, would you call those images high contrast, super saturated, or some other term?  I'd like to know because I am apparently a big fan of whatever it is those images have and others lack.  Is it the high-quality lens, the lighting, post-processing, polarizing filters, or some other thing...all those things?  Any tips for getting more of that from my camera would be welcome.  I suppose the number one tip would be to practice.  Anyway, very nice!

The orange is from the museum lighting, incandescent, I assume, and the blue is from a window adjacent to the exhibit.

It's definitely not the polarization filter because I didn't use one.  The key is to have a pleasing composition.  You can have a pleasing photo with or without high contrast/saturation, but a photo with high contrast/saturation but with poor composition is still a poor photo.

Just like well-recorded boring music is still boring music.  But still, those images would be less interesting if they were washed-out and fuzzy.
