Linear power supply and SB3 Digital Out
« on: 23 Jan 2011, 05:09 am »
I use a NOS DAC for SB3's digital output. The SB3 is powered by its original power supply. Will it further improve the system if I use a linear power supply for SB3?

I found that adding a linear power supply increased sound quality on my DUET. I use the one from Parts Express, one of the best bang for your buck tweeks I've done. I use digital and analog outputs and the soundstage got wider, deeper, more low end...I was quite surprised.
Here is the one I use...

and the adapter set...

Thanks. Does it run very hot as some of the reviewers stated? This linear power supply has a output voltage range of 3V to 12V. If you select 5V, I think it should run very hot.

The SB3 will benefit more from a regulated, linear power supply than any Squeezebox that followed.  You can hear it putting out RFI by holding a transistor radio close to it.  It doesn't get just the Squeezebox, it infects almost every device nearby.

The Parts Express PS is fine for the DUET, but I would not suggest it for the SB3/Touch. It is very inexpensively made and could use quite a bit more heatsinking. This is not a problem for the DUET receiver as it does not require much current.

The Jerome Industries power supply, available surplus from here offers the best value. The DC connector has to be replaced to be used with the SB3.

There are quite a few linear power supplies made for the SB3/Touch, but they all are quite a bit more expensive. I also feel they do sound quite a bit better, but for the money the Jerome is a good deal. Much better sounding than the stock switcher.

My Jerome hums quite a bit. The mechanical hum it makes is by far the single biggest noisemaker in my system.

I'm going to try to move it into the basement and run the cord through the floor - hoping it reaches OK.

None of the adapters are an exact fit, I eventually went back to the stock power wallwart.

Thanks all for the comments. Maybe I should get the Parts Express PS and modify the circuit a bit. I am an EE and I used to teach power systems when I was in the grad school.

Does this power supply have room inside for mods?

Well what do you want to experience? SB3 with the original low-fi SWPS is not worth any DAC in front of it, not even its own.

If you want to go beyond the inbuild DAC of the SB3 you are obliged to yourself to throw that SWPS* in the dustbin for an "analogue" PWS. If you do switch to a decent PWS then even ite SB3 own DAC will sound so much better...

the better the PWS is, the better the SB3/DUET/Touch will sound

Ask Wayne or better explore his website, He is the Logitech master
* SWPS will do as  a very good mobile phone charger, I must admit

+1 for Wayne's advice, I never got a bad tip or even a marginal sound quality increase when using Wayne's idea's, it has always been UPgrade...He Knows The Way Of The Squeezebox!!!! :thumb: :thumb:
