CD Player's Skipping: Bit the Dust?
« on: 19 Jan 2011, 01:41 pm »
My Arcam CD-72 CD player has lately started to randomly and sporadically skip over parts of a song to a point later on the disk or skip back within the song being played. I've used a CD cleaning disk but it still occurs. What's causing this? Can I fix it or should I just look for another player. If the latter, could I just get something inexpensive because I run it through a DAC?

Thanks very much.

Most skipping sometimes is caused by dirty CDs.  If the CDs are clean and no scratches, then it can be the optical lens or the transport mechanism.  It can be repaired cheaply.  I am guessing.  There are many good transport that can be found cheap for what its worth.  Good luck.

I wouldn't even recommend upgrading the Cd-72.  Here is a bad example.  It's a good reading if you ask me.

Thanks, Levi. No worries about me doing any mods. I can't do anything mechanical or electrical.

Besides you are using a DAC anyway.  I figured to post it here since it was a good reading.

I know of a few people who have bought the Pioneer PD-65 with the stable platter mechanism.
It would make a fine transport and some say just a heck of a great player.

Here's a gem above...

I would buy one, but my wife is putting the brakes on Hi-Fi now.

The skipping is most likely from the laser being out of alignment (or dirt). A repair shop might be able to get that fixed for you if you don't want to replace it.

Hey!

My Sony SACD-C200ES 5discs changer started acting up a couple of months ago. I bought this back in 2004 or 05 I think.

It would skip around the same area or time of the disc on every disc. I thought it was dust on the lens at first. So, I opened it up checked the laser lens of which looks fine. Since it seems to skip the only around one spot so I gave it last shot by cleaning and oiling the main laser head rail. Luckily it was easy to get to the rail and etc in that machine.

And that solved the problem. I forgot to re-grease the other side of which was plastic but it seems to work fine now. So far so good. :D

So, if your CDP is couple of years old than maybe this could be a cause also.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

MWG, my older modded Onkyo did that too. I bought compressed air from Radio Shack and cleaned the lens of dirt. Pretty easy to do - emptied it of cd's, took off cover with tray in out position, sprayed lens and area around it. A couple cd's still skipped but less. Cleaned them and only have the rare skip which I think is cd's. Searched and read someone recommends Glass Plus as cd cleaner which I will find and try. Also going to do the lens cleaning again. This Onkyo was modded by Stan Warren who has stated that some lenses can be damaged by rubbing them with cloth with fluids so I just stick with compressed air fwiw.

time to dip your toe in computer based audio pond?

whether Apple, MS-doze or Linux, virtually any decent current computer/sound card / DAC combo can deliver sonic performance equal to any but the loftiest priced audiophile approved all-in one or separates system - often at a fraction of the cost

and then there's the convenience

it took me a couple of years to get around to the idea, but since converting, generally the only time I handle a silver disc is to load into my music library ( iTunes/Mac in this case) -  I probably spin in my Jolida about once every couple of weeks.

My cd player started skipping, and i tried cleaning the discs/laser lens...and skipping continued.
(something bad on mechanism)

Took it to a repair shop, they repaired it...and everything was fine.
After 7 months, skipping again!!

My player went to Hi-Fi heaven.
