Carver Professional Does Home Audio?

I heard through the grapevine that Carver Professional will be introducing a Home Audio Series of Amplifiers using Tripath Digital Technology. Last we heard from David Garlett, Carver's direction was solely  Pro Audio. A little bird also told me, David is very pleased with the results. Look out for Carver Pro to stun us with digital amplifiers designed for home audio. If this is true, I'd like to thank all of the members here on audiocircle and audioasylum who pleaded with David to make  home audio amplifiers.

I had to check with David Garlett myself to find out about Carver releasing home audio products. David confirmed that Carver is back! Apparently there were some legal issues behind releasing home audio products under the Carver name. Carver will be launching a complete line of home audio products including speakers. No specifics were given, however, R&D has already begun.

earlmarc, thanks for the heads up. The potential for a better implimentation
of the Tripath technology, hopefully without all the op-amps,is something to look forward to.

I'm thinking that a nice Tripath MC amp would be cool, say maybe 200 x 5?  Or even 300 x 5?  Good parts quality, stout power supply, quality binding posts- no matter what they make someone's still gonna mod it, but it would be nice to see the main points covered.

this is from the carver professional homepage....

"Phoenix Gold Announces the Acquisition of Carver Corporation
January 2004

Phoenix Gold International, Inc. has announced its acquisition of the marketing assets of Carver Corporation, including the Carver name — along with plans to actively rebuild the once highly regarded Carver brand, beginning with a full line of new consumer and professional audio products.

Phoenix Gold’s action marks the completion of a project to acquire the marketing assets of Carver Corporation, a respected developer and manufacturer of mid- and high-end audio components that ceased operations upon filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1999. A few years earlier, in 1995, Phoenix Gold acquired the full line of Carver Professional products, and has been designing, building and marketing Carver Professional amplifiers worldwide ever since.

Final agreement on the present acquisition was reached with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Seattle, Washington on Jan. 14, 2004. It authorizes Phoenix Gold to take ownership of the Carver name for a full line of consumer and professional products.

“ This represents the final step in a long process to develop a full-line product strategy for Carver, using the varied resources of Phoenix Gold International,” said Roland MacBeth, President of Phoenix Gold International. “Our engineering group and product development teams have a complete roadmap in place to rebuild this respected brand into an active, healthy, innovative participant in the audio marketplace over the next few years.

“We have invested considerable time and resources to complete the acquisition, and are tremendously excited at the opportunity for growth it represents for our company,” continued Mr. MacBeth. “Carver Corporation had a strong tradition of developing well-engineered, innovative products. Our intention is to reestablish the Carver tradition through a comprehensive collection of consumer and professional electronics products bearing the Carver name.”

That is good news. I have higher expectations from the new Carver than the old, given the fact they have done so much with Tripath technology. I never though much of the original Carver stuff.

Does anyone remember the original "magnetic field amp" - it was a little cube that put out 200 watts/channel, at least theoretically (downhill with the wind at your back   ). I think it was just a switching power supply with a really aggresive protection circuit. As soon as it even suspected clipping it shut down for a few seconds, and it was not hard to make it clip!

Or how about "sonic holography"? Basically it remixed an out of phase signal from one channel into the other if I recall correctly. I was young and foolish and bought the original standalone Sonic Holograph. It was superficially impressive until you realized that it totally destroyed the original soundstage, and added noise in the process.

So I wonder how quickly the new home products can be launched?

I also have higher expectations of PG's Carver amps than the old product.  I bought a Carver amp in '93 or so, it was a complete POS.  An LED fell out the first day, and the transformer buzzed loudly.  I returned it and swore off Carver.

Here's hoping that PG has included an integrated amp in their R&D.  I was thinking about buying one of the new receivers with digital amps, but all I really want or need is a 2 ch. integrated.  Make it with microprocessor controlled volume, digital inputs, and remote control and I'll be a happy clam.  In the meantime, I've pulled my Sony ES integrated mosfet amp out of storage and I'm rediscovering how decent this thing actually is.
