Updates on Carver ZR1600 and mods??
« on: 17 Mar 2004, 07:04 pm »
Hi

I just heard about the Carver tripath amps on the Asylum and have been reading the archives here the last couple of days.

I note that there hasn't been much traffic re this amp (or the zr1000) in recent weeks. Has interest fallen off or: 1) is everyone beavering away at mods or 2) just enjoying listening to theirs?

I was particularly struck by someone's description of these amps as sounding like a 200W 300B and yet someone else said they don't particularly sound tube-like. Any other impressions?

Mine continues to impress/satisfy me. Mellow, with fantastic speaker/bass control...Tripath chips are the best compromise for the tube lover in me. The Carver ZR is a special value in my opinion.

If the Griffin PowerWave is any indication, subsequent generations of chips are even better. Anyone who doubts the potential here should audition the Bel Canto eVo series of audiophile designs and get over any controversy. The improvement in the BC offering's sound over the ZR does not justify the 600% greater price with half the power, in my view.

I know over twenty people happily involved with the use of Tripath based amps in one form or another. I even use a Blaupunkt Tripath amp in my car.

Low cost evaluation boards are available from Tripath, the lower power units are plug n play, up to about 50 watts for under $200. One cannot lose.

Thanks, the Griffin Powerwave post on the Asylum hipped me to the Carver.

I'm starting to wonder if I should go ahead with my battery powered gainclone project or just pop for a Carver.

I am in the process of modifying the ZR1600.  Dave Garlett says that the ZR1000 actually sounds better, particularly if used in bridged mode.  The nice thing about a modded amp versus one that you design yourself is that there are many protection and detection circuits that can be helpful and prevent damaging the amp and/or speakers.  I believe that both the ZR1600 and 1000 have potential.  There are a LOT of improvements that can be made to an already good-sounding amp.  It has a massive transformer, it is very quiet and has reasonable protections - fuses, filtering and overvoltage protection.  Pro audio gear tends to be made very bullet-proof.  The main problem with these amps is they have way too many features and switches to use these features.   It is also somewhat modular to allow different input and output boards etc..  This drives the parts count and the number of op-amps used to an unreasonable number.  This add a lot of noise and sibilance.  It also has protections in terms of bandwidth limiting.  Most of this stuff is not necessary for audiophile use.  Once these "extras" are removed, without compromising the protection mechanisms, I believe it will be a stellar amp, maybe even unbeatable, certainly at the price-point.

Carver ZR Modifications

I have two ZR1600. One has been modified by 8th Nerve. I loved the ZR prior to the mod, and find the following after:
1.  It is dead quiet
2.  High frequencies seem to smoother, and more revealing. This is amazing, since the system was so revealing prior to modification.
3.  The around 10,000 cycle harshness that Brian Cheney wrote about is gone.

Anyway, I have a great amp that was made better. I will write more when I get my other back from additional modifications. I still think that these units offer the best bang for the buck of anything that I have heard. At less than a grand with modifications, the Carver equals the very best.

i have been using my ZR1000 since last october and i have not modified it in any way....

it is a fantastic amp... the best one i've ever tried in my system....

and you're right.... i haven't been posting about it mainly because i've been too busy watching movies and listening to music.....

i use mine to power a pair of Klipsch KLF-30's...very efficient horn speakers... and very revealing of any imperfections in the signal chain....

you can't go wrong with this amp...either stock or modified... it is really the best bang for the buck.... the ZR1000's are going for about $750 on more than a couple of websites....

cheers!!!!

ZR "potential"
Audioengr states:

"I believe that both the ZR1600 and 1000 have potential"

This statement, and many others in past months imply that in their stock form the ZR series aren't that great, yet at the same time there are many of us out here stating that the stock ZRs are the best amps we've ever owned - or heard for that matter. It seems odd to me that  the best amp I've ever heard would be described by anyone as having "potential"

I've been listening to my ZR1000 for about 10 months and am constantly amazed by its performance in my system. I don't doubt that mods could make it sound even better -  but while those who have posted mod results note that improvements resulted, they don't seem to characterize these improvements as bringing the amp to a whole new level.

Sure, I've done a couple of things like replace the fan with a quiet one and damp the inside of the casing, but until I'm convinced that the mods currently being offered make a "major" difference, I'm not willing to part with mine for long enough to have any work done.

Where did you guys buy your Carver Pro ZR-series amp?  The web site doesn't list U.S. dealers yet.

The Eighth Nerve is a dealer for Carver.  They also mod them, and the have a Circle here in the Manufacturers area.

Having listened to the VR1600 grab the woofers of the RMXs for the past couple of weeks, it's truly a special amplifier considering the pricepoint.  Swapped out the fan for a more quiet one, and let the music and movies play.

Suppose you could call placing black electrical tape over the bright LEDs a positive enhancement too.

I agree with Matt's comment regarding the modifications; likely reaching toward diminishing returns.  I'm looking forward to putting the modification savings toward a second Carver Pro amplifier purchase.

Chris,
Shane at hometheaterdoc.com was helpful with this purchase.
