This is a really good link for reference material (& not): http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342

Lots of Blu-ray animation movies are good show-offs.  Kung Fu Panda has some incredible earth-shaking bass.  Toy Story III is really good. Tim Burton movies like Corpse Bride, Coraline ...

The Kill Bill movies are really good, as is Sin City (rough subject matter in these though).  The Earth Nature series has beautiful images.

Also, check out the 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 aspect ratios to better utilize the full screen vs. 2.4:1 typical film wide screen versions.

So many of the Blu-ray releases suck out loud content/ story-wise.  I'd rather watch a Criterion release lesser picture/ sound quality older movie than a lot of the junk they are cranking out right now.  But that's me ...

1. The Shining - I was giddy when I watched this on BR. I've seen it a thousand times since I was a kid and it's never looked so good. When the waves of blood rush into the hallway... awesome.
2. The Assassination of Jesse James By
The Coward Robert Ford -my vote for best western in recent memory and possibly best cinematography in recent memory.
3. Alien - beautiful transfer.
4. 2001 - same

I only buy for the visuals, don't care the noise.

Do you buy these solely to test/show off the system or because you like them?

Because I like, or think I'll like, the movie.  Just happens that many of the movies I like also good, so lucky me.  Not going to go off and buy a bunch of sappy chick flicks even if they look great...that is unless, um, my wife asks me to.

1)Planet Earth- For video quality..I have the BBC version suppose to better
2)Transporter "2" -For Audio... "T-3" good too. In 2 there is a scene where a car crashes in to the house and the low frequency's start before crash and then bam...only time I have said "whoa!!" from an effect
3) Black&White Night Roy Orbison Music Video..not much on video perf...but audio is good
4) Cars for animated video quality good audio (Finding Nemo a close second)
5) James Bond  the recent ones.."Quantam of Solace" & " Casino Royale" Audio effects excellent.. Video good too...and it's James Bond.

These test and show off my system and are movies I can watch over.

Ratatouille has amazing picture quality, plus I really like the movie.

Avatar
Fifth Element
Terminator 3
and what everyone else said.  Most all the animated movies look really good though, I'd watch one of them.

Bob C mentioned Dark Knight and I totally agree with this. Reason being, there are a handful of scenes in that film that were shot on IMAX cameras...they look absolutely STUNNING. You'll know which ones they are not only because of how amazing they look, but because the aspect ratio for those shots is 16:9 as opposed to the rest of the film being in 2.35:1

I can't think of a more impressive bluray demo than those scenes  :thumb:

anything with a lot of black /dark scenes in it  - good for sorting out the men from the boys home theater wise.

Makes LCD / LED owners realize the error of their ways :P

FYI, this is a wonderful resource for evaluating new Blu-Ray releases.  They do a good comparison of the standard vs Blu-Ray versions of your favorite movies and can tell you whether it's really worth upgrading:
