So I bought some Grado's, now I understand what all the fuss is about.

Is there anyone who had negative experience with grado 60? Or is it only me?
I honestly can't stand their sound, it's just a torture to listen through them. Very fatiguing sound.
And they are certainly not a bargain. They would be an ok value for $9.99 :)

I listen to mine all day long at work, 5 days a week. I'm using a tube amp and playing FLAC files though.  I find the headphones to be outstanding and not colored or fatiguing.  And I think they're a fantastic bargain, considering I've used them for years at about 9-10 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Like anything in audio it is a subjective thing, I just know for me when I first heard them I was like "why did I not find these sooner!!!" :o
I've done a few of the mods outlined on Head-fi and the improvements are there and pretty easy to make, I look forward to continuing the mods and hopefully not brick them!!! :duh:

So I did some mods to my SR60's
 1) New Earpads-"Donut Bowls"
 2) Removed White Linen Covering Driver
 3) Took earcups apart and added some holes (4) in liner surrounding driver. (Not as evil as it sounds)
Those cats over at head-fi can surely dial in the cans man!!! The tweaks alone are subtle but all together they add up to more bass, a bit more detail...adding the holes-of which there are ten openings so you can do 10 I did 4-really elevated the bass but also brought out more detail, alot of guys do 10 and say it was too much high-end, some like it...4 was good for me, its just amazing somebody decided one day to do try all these things, like guy number 1 who thought these up...fun stuff!! Here is the thread on Head-fi for those about to rock..

Really cool thread ...

This is the info I have (I could be wrong) on various model up the chain in the Prestige like SR 60 to SR22i
- there is better matching between drivers - it affects the imaging / focus (blur vs. sharp)
- the pads are different from SR60 to the rest
- there is better (thicker) and updated cable in SR225i up
- perhaps more quality control
- perhaps more damping
- headphone jack is 1/8" on 60 and 80 vs. 1/4" for the rest of the line
- they throw in 1/4" to 1/8" inch dongle from SR125 up - that one can but separately
- Don't know from which model - they throw in the extension cord ???

But I am really impressed - briefly reading about by the SR60 mods - seems like they are trying to convert SR60 into say SR125 / 225

I love Grados but you have to replace the foam earpieces and/or do mods to make the darn things more comfortable fpr long term listening.  Aside from the comfort issue, I like them a lot.

I got these earpads:

They came an hour after the headphones arrived and the improvement was amazing,
these guys at head-fi totally transform these into some cool looking headphones...

I was in Toronto today to meet with some clients, have dinner and catch the Atlanta vs Raptors NBA game.

During the afternoon, I took the opportunity to visit with one of the prominent AV stores downtown, and spent about an hour in front of their wall of headphones.

I heard the

60i
80i
225is
325is
RS1i

I also gave a quick listen to these Sennheisers

555
595
650

It was not via my music, or my source, but it was all via the same source and music - they are able to simultaneously drive 30 pairs of headphones off a receiver, so it was kind of fair.

Surprisingly to me, I favoured the 80i's over everything else.  I liked their balance, and presentation vs all the others.  Further up the Grado chain were nice, but facing the $ increases, I did not see it for me.  Perhaps better amplification etc would bring out the advances, but I am unlikely to invest in that anyway.  I did prefer the foam bowl style pads of the 225is to the flats on the 60 and 80's though, I would need a set of those for sure.

There is a used set of Alessandro M1's near me, they may end up in my house, but I will have to sell off my Beyerdynamic DT770's!

WerTicus

I've been rocking some 150$ grados for a while now... the only issue with them is that hairs can easily get into the mesh protecting the driver and cause buzzing, so you need to clean them fairly often.

Sounds like FUN!!! The "Donut Bowls" are are definite two fold upgrade-1) Comfort 2) They do away with the thick foam over the driver, like taking off the grill cloth.
If the SR80i's do it then I say go for it, you can always get daring like I did and mod them, sorta like tube rolling your cans..LOL.
Since, what I got these SR60's Saturday, I have been walking around during the day with my ipod/E5/SR60 uniform on, shoveling snow-actually watching the maintenance guy shovel. I watched all the football games whilst tuning out with my new cans, they sound good and they are FUN!!!   Never forget--FUN!!!! :thumb:

It'd be interesting to see if the people who prefer one set of headphones (or speakers for that matter) over another set of headphones have some type of physical differences that make them prefer those headphones.  For instance, I always thought that B&W speakers were excruciatingly bright and basically unlistenable, but many, many other people do not.  I wonder if there's a physical reason why that may be so.

Those look really cool!  Are the earpads leather?  I don't see that as an option on the weblink.

Also, it looks like you have some other mods done.  Care to explain?

Thanks!

Bob...The picture I posted was of a guys cans over at head-fi, mine are still looking very stock right now but thats gonna change soon. I was checking out those earpads on that guys cans also and I'm not sure where he found those. I really like the touch of Red he has going on and the metal pieces- the guy or gal is a nurse and those metal hydraulic looking things are from Blood Pressure cuffs related to the bulb used for pumping up the cuff.

The stuff they do is amazing, the one guy named Bill over there has a 5 or 6 part youtube video tutorial on how to mod these....mine are soon to get Coccobolo wood chambers replacing the stiock plastic ones, I'll post pics when I start it.

All along the way this past week as I'm modding these internally I keep going back to my Ultrasones to compare and tonite with only a few mods done they sound better then my $300+ headphones...not bad...."Close To The Edge" was phenomenal, I totally forgot I was listening to the headphones and got lost in the music.....very cool stuff!!!!Yep I have no life..
Whatever you can buy in a better Grado, you can build into the Grado you already have.
