New Vinyl issues/reissues you have heard
« on: 8 Jan 2011, 04:08 pm »
Geographically I am in an area, where finding old records is a challenge. I am planning a trip to NYC for that in the future.
Till then are there any new records that sound good/very good.
I listen to everything but Classical, so please recommend away!

Thanks!

There are so many reissues, I don't know where to start. Perhaps my 2 cents would be which label to be cautious with. I'm not real happy with Hollywood records. Lots of Queen is on this label and there are several issues, like the cutting itself to QC problems, like scratches and warps (yes they still can't get it right). Classic records is a good label, but they have been recently bought out, so I'd snap on some of those reissues ASAP. Friday Music has been re-doing the Yes collection, and some are great (90125) others, I'm on the fence with, like Relayer and CTTE.

Rhino has done an excellent job with Chicago, the Doors and the Grateful Dead reissues. The Doors and Grateful Dead are Box sets--very nice. Most, but not all Sundazed reissues are good. Stay away from 4 Men with Beards label. I haven't found a good one yet. I haven't been thrilled with the "Back to Black" reissues either. The Tom Petty reissue I have is excellent.

Matador Records does a very good job on new releases. Lots of good indie rock and power pop on that label. There is some real good Canadian indie rock on the Arts & Crafts label and I have found the quality of the pressings to be good. A lot of Pacific NW bands (e.g. Death Cab for Cutie; Fleet Foxes) are on or started on the Sub Pop label. Pressing quality varies but is pretty good for the most part.

I am a rock n roll girl and it is great to see almost all new releases coming out on vinyl as well as some digital format.

You might want to move this thread to the Vinyl Circle to get more feedback.

The first three Elvis Costello reissues from Mobile Fidelity are great. The vinyl is not the quietest out there, partly because there is no compression whatsoever and you have to crank it up a little higher than typical. But I agree with other reviews I've read: this is the best I've heard yet. I only have the US issues, though.

Thanks Laura. They are supposed to come out with Get Happy! this year, on two disks. The original had 10 songs per side!

If you like Jazz and you also like acoustic bass paired with piano a must listen is Ray Brown's "Soular Energy" on Pure Audiophile 180g.  The content and the recording are simply stunning.  I especially like the alternate takes of Duke Ellington's "Take The A Train" and the old standard "Sweet Georgia Brown".  CAUTION:  Retail Price:  $50.00.  Got mine from Eluisive Disk during a 10% off sale.  BTW, Gene Harris is the pianist-a long time partner of Ray's.  They had great synergy together.  Worth every penny, avoid Starbucks for 10 days and you'll have the money to buy it. :thumb:

Wayner, I just picked up Yes-Close to the Edge on Friday Music.  It's good but definitely not perfect.  Been wondering if it is the pressing or the source material.  I'm half convinced OLD Yes may not have the best masters.  Any thoughts?  Been debating getting Relayer next as that is my favorite.

Wish MoFi could release some Yes on vinyl.  They only have Fragile on digital.

I concur with the Ray Brown recommendation. That's a wonderful session and you don't have to be a die hard jazz fan enjoy it. The orig issue has very good sonics, so it would be a good one to pick up used, if you can find it in good condition.

My experience with new vinyl is somewhat limited, but buying regular jazz reissues ($15 Blue Note, OJC) has been disappointing. The quality is consistantly bad - noisy, scratches, and/or poor sound quality. These are replacements for me and I remember the orig issues. So I guess as a general rule it's better to get a higher quality reissue or an orig in good condition. Not 100% sure of that one, but I'd rather have 1 really nice record than 3 that I avoid playing.

I just received Kansas Leftoverture from Friday Music and I give them a thumbs up on customer service, packaging, and the vinyl quality. That being said, the recording leaves a little to be desired. It "sounds" to me like it was from a digital master, and it doesn't have the dynamics and soundstage of the original pressing I have. I'm not sure if it was the remastering by Friday Music, or their source of master, but the sound is just not what I was expecting. I'm on the fence right now about ordering more from their catalog. They have some really interesting stuff that is from my early listening days so I'll probably try a couple more and see if the results are the same as the Kansas release.

Just busted open my brand new Grateful Dead Warner years box set (their 1st 5 albums).  After reading some reviews of these being REALLY good, I wholeheartedly agree so far.  Listening to American Beauty right now.  Not a hint of noise and sounds amazingly natural.  I'd read they'd taken great care in these.  BIG BIG thumbs up to Rhino on these. :thumb:  Wish all the other brand spankin' new vinyl I've dumped money into lately sounded half as good.

The postman just delivered 2 new LP's that I ordered from the Big A.

Cake - Showroom of Compassion (limited edition red vinyl, 180gm)

The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall (an RTI pressing on 180gm vinyl)

First the good:

The Jayhawks album is amazing! Wonderful pressing with trememdous soundstage, all the dynamics are there, and the vinyl is dead quiet. This has always been a good sounding recording, even on CD, and this vinyl copy was taken from the original masters according to RTI. If you like the Jayhawks, this is a must have.

Now the bad:

Having just seen Cake live in December, I was excited about getting their latest release when I heard it would be available on vinyl. What a dissapointment.  :(
The vinyl quality is good, very quiet, but the dynamics are not there, the soundstage is very narrow, and the vocals sounds as if they were recorded in a small closet. All of the other Cake releases I have are on CD, and sound very good. I'm not sure what happened here, if it was the mastering of the vinyl or if the original digital master is that bad. I'll have to get the CD and compare.

I have posted this elsewhere on this site, but I should reiterate that the Rhino version of The Yes Album was terrible. I replaced my well-worn copy with the Rhino and give my original to my daughter. Eventually got around to listening to it and I had to take my original back! She has the Rhino now...My copy was worn to the point that the bottom of the record jacket was wearing through. But the sound was WAY better.

Try some Frank Zappa.  He was considered a wiz at production.   Always great sound!

A staple of college, fantastic record. I have mine that's a gatefold, and recently acquired what we called the "pizza pie" multicolored vinyl with the trifold. Does this have any fancy vinyl or a special cover? At 10 bucks, who could complain, right?

The Doors and Frank Zappa have already been mentioned but not, I believe:

the first four Neil Young albums
Jefferson Airplane in both mono and stereo releases
PJ Harvey
The Who

all of these on 180 or 200gm have been really good.
Orthobiz, you heard right about the 200gm Hot Rats.
