Best (?) USB drive for audio files?
« on: 6 Jan 2011, 04:17 pm »
I'm mainly a vinyl guy, but is there a better or best type of USB drive to store and play audio files? I would be using the USB port on my OPPO BD-93.

Appreciate the help for this evolving digo-phile.

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB and it uses the sought after Oxford chipset.

Then again if you're only going to use USB you can probably just use a 1TB flash drive and be done with it.  All the other goodies on the above drive really won't mean much.   :dunno:

I like the Toshiba Canvio drives.  You should verify whether the Oppo can power a bus powered USB hard drive.  If it can then you can use a 2.5" drive like the Canvios without the need for another wall wart.

Why do you like them?

Mostly because they've been reliable.  They contain Toshiba hard drives, since Toshiba is a drive manufacturer, unlike some third party portable drive makers where the drive in the box might be from different companies.  They're available in larger sizes (for a 2.5" drive), up to 1 TB.  They're often on special at Newegg, so can be fairly inexpensive.  Unlike some other brands (Western Digital, for one) they don't come with any difficult to remove 'virtual CD' partitions containing application software.

Also, they work with the Squeezebox Touch, whereas a couple of other brands of bus powered drives did not.  Probably just means that they require less power to spin up.

Did you really mean to say flash drive?  The largest USB flash drives (thumb drives) I know about are 256GB for ~ $700 and 1TB SSD drives for an external USB enclosure are ~ $3000.

Make sure the drives are quiet during operation.  I recommended 1-2Tb Lacie HDD sometime ago to a friend and unfortunately he can hear the HDD during music playback.  In between music or soft passages that is.  NAS would be another solution if you have sensitive ears.
