MC HELL
« on: 5 Jan 2011, 09:09 pm »
This will be my documented  build of a passive 4way that includes 2-Audio Technology custom 12's with 4"VC and a 12 " Volt(3143) for midbass and  dual ATC 75/150 mids and dual Scanspeak 9700(one rear fire). It will be a 2 cabinet setup with the bottom cabinet housing the 3-12's...all front firing vents and the midbass in its own 1'cubed box within a 9.9'cubed cabinet.
Large and heavy but thats the """HELL""" part.

I think you should rename it WOW!  Maybe that name has been taken....  Very ambitious, keep us posted on progress, perhaps you might expand a bit on you driver choice and enclosure design now though.

Sounds pretty solid :) Is the crossover active or passive (or a mix)?

All crossovers are passive(12db/octave) and with the help of Chris at Solen in Montreal we are crossing:
2-12"AT /200hz
1-12"Volt/200hz-800hz
2-ATC mids/800hz-3800hz
2-SS 9700 highs/3800hz
the setup is also designed for passive triamping

So far the rough fit looks good. All corners and edges are true.Next is putting holes in braces, vents, speaker openings and back connections. And keep on breaking in the drivers.

Slow, yeah!  I thought you'd be done by now.  I'm sure you have good reasons for not finishing yet, and I do sympathize as I'm the King of unfinished and abandoned projects.  But ya gotta come come clean, how pissed is your wife not being able to park in the garage through all these blizzards?

Yes Slow...I was called back to work(bulldozer) for a while(gone all week).
I got a chance to finish up the fronts and all the foam.As soon as the glue is dry,I will start on bolts and T-nuts...In the meantime,I am working on outboard rear mounted boxes for the crossovers.Picked up a Krell KSA 300s(fully recapped last March) in excellent shape(Pic shows the styrafoam from box as I just pulled it out after its 1500 mile journey).

I think I see at least two places where you could have put more clamps on that baffle. Now you are just getting lazy! :green:

On your midbass crossover section, conventional wisdom would suggest not laying two inductors on the same plane. It may or may not make a difference but if you could stand one on edge and "point" it perpendicular to the other you would be better off.

That is looking mighty impressive there mcl.  In the pics it's hard to see where the router messed things up, what happened?

Well 3 big guys later and a long night and ""WE HAVE LIFT OFF""......I was missing alot of lower information on my old speakers(my own design falt)...Well I have it now, loads actually..I think the KSA 300s has met its match(I think somewhere in the 500w/ch area should suffice)...the AT drivers and crossovers need some breakin time, but now you can throw on any redbook, audiophile,or SACD and this system rumbles, yet has lots of details.Time for some Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet.

mclsound,

Would you mind sharing your thoughts about your AT, Volt, ATC, and Scan-Speak speakers?  What do you think about the AT woofers?  :thumb:

Did you ever take measurements of the entire system?
